Abstract<br />

“<strong>Diabetes</strong> Care for School children <strong>in</strong> Bahra<strong>in</strong>”<br />

the <strong>in</strong>cidence of diabetes <strong>in</strong> children <strong>in</strong> bahra<strong>in</strong> is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g. Car<strong>in</strong>g for children with diabetes<br />

is challeng<strong>in</strong>g task for families , teachers and their health professionals. We have observed that<br />

children who have diabetes are often very dependent on their parents <strong>in</strong> car<strong>in</strong>g for diabetes, and<br />

still there is no one has the responsibility to carry out the measures of diabetes care <strong>in</strong> school<br />

environment. therefore children have mutually an <strong>in</strong> equal status totally depend<strong>in</strong>g on the school<br />

they attend, where some depend on their patents com<strong>in</strong>g to school to give <strong>in</strong>sul<strong>in</strong> and count<br />

carbohydrates. it is important that there is good communication between the parents, school<br />

staff and the diabetes care team. the key part of ensur<strong>in</strong>g good diabetes care for children at<br />

school is a clear understand<strong>in</strong>g of who will be responsible for each task. the effective diabetes<br />

management at school can promote a healthy, productive learn<strong>in</strong>g environment for student with<br />

diabetes and reduce absence, reduce classroom disruption, help assure effective response <strong>in</strong> case<br />

of diabetes –related emergency and promote full participation <strong>in</strong> all areas of school curriculum<br />

and extra-curriculum activities. therefore bahra<strong>in</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong> society cooperated with school health<br />

Services and Pediatric endocr<strong>in</strong>e departments and diabetes team <strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health to carry<br />

a recommended model for diabetes care for school children <strong>in</strong> bahra<strong>in</strong>, by produc<strong>in</strong>g a general<br />

guidel<strong>in</strong>es on who responsible for each part of child’s diabetes care at school and <strong>in</strong>struction how<br />

to educate a person to be able to perform the task. the purpose of this guidel<strong>in</strong>es is to make the<br />

day at school safe and simple not only to the child with diabetes but as well empower the staff at<br />

school the same way. a workshop was held for school staff ,expla<strong>in</strong> this guidel<strong>in</strong>es and the care<br />

of diabetes children at school.<br />

Bahra<strong>in</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong> Society held yearly a camp for school diabetes children and the aim of this camp<br />

is to raise the awareness about diabetes <strong>in</strong> children, care for themselves , to be <strong>in</strong>dependent and<br />

confident…they can live full, healthy and productive.<br />
