Gestational Diabetes Mellitus – an overview
the prevalence of GDM is reflective of the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in that population.
therefore the ethnic and racial populations with high prevalence of diabetes are also at higher risk
of developing GDM.
the prevalence of type 2 diabetes & iGt along with GDM in various iDf regions & with special
reference to Mena & sea regions is presented. the reasons for the increase in GDM are also
discussed.
Children born of mothers with GDM or diabetes are at increased risk of developing obesity, iGt &
diabetes; this may be independent of genetic risk factors.
interventional strategies from preconception to postnatal period & the importance of co-ordinated
efforts to reduce the prevalence of GDM in women & their offspring is discussed & highlighted.

Dr. Mahen Wijesuriya
Dr. Mahen is a Consultant physician and Diabetologist in Colombo, sri Lanka. he obtained his Mbbs
and his MD from the university of Ceylon, Colombo and is a fellow of the royal College of physician
London and the Ceylon College of physicians in sri Lanka.
he has pioneered the establishment of the Diabetes association of sri Lanka (DasL) and the
national Diabetes Centre which serves as the first and only centre of excellence committed to the
prevention of diabetes both primary and secondary.
in recognition of his work in sri Lanka, he has been invited to join the board of Management and
the executive board of the iDf since 2000 todate. he currently is the Chairman of the south-east
asian region of iDf in addition to the above.
Dr. Wijesuriya spearheaded various projects in his quest to serve the diabetic fraternity of sri
Lanka’. the “insulin bank “ of the DasL is the most important project initiated to provides best
quality insulin and screening and monitoring services free of charge to needy type 1 diabetes
children in the country.
it was his vision to bring together a powerful international gathering of experts in 2002 in Colombo
to arrive at a consensus on the aetiology of t2DM under the auspices of the iDf.
it is hoped that the “ Kathmandu Declaration “ will be a climax of this process where a global
prevention strategy is expected to be agreed upon as part of the united nations implementation
strategy.
