Abstract Title What does the evidence say about the fetal and neonatal safety about the use of oral Ant Diabetic Drugs (aDD) in pregnancy and Lactation author : Dr. shabeen naz Masood ;Muhammad faraz Masood MD objective : to review the safety of oral anti diabetic agents in pregnancy and Lactation Results : • • • • • • • • Glyburide and metformin are not teratogenic in humans when used in clinically recommended doses. Glyburide may be used for treatment of gestational diabetes in some women. Metformin may be used safely for ovulation in women with pCos. Metformin reduces the development of GDM, was not teratogenic and did not affect birth length, weight, growth motor or social development in children in first 18 months of life tolbutamide, Chloropropamide cross into the breast milk None of the glyburides pass in the breast milk samples. MetforMin: excreted in the breast milk at very low levels no differences in weight, height or motor-social development of the newborn or in the infants up to 3-6 months of age are reported. CONCLUSIONS:. • • • • • there is evidence that certain oral hypoglycemic drugs might be safe in pregnancy, or at least, are significantly less dangerous to the developing fetus than poorly controlled diabetes. Metformin, Glyburide and Glypizide are compatible with breast feeding these agents may be used in research settings if the patient needs intervention but refuses insulin therapy, patient is aware of potential or probable risks 52
Abstract Title Final Height Achieved in Children & Adolescents treated for Type 1 Diabetes Suliman Abusrewil S. Abusrewil, I. Hadeed, M. Kabuka, M. Kresta, A. Gareba, F. Osman **type 1 diabetes in children is well known to adversely affect linear growth and pubertal development. in the years immediately following the introduction of insulin therapy, short stature was consistently reported in children with type1 Diabetes. however, over the past 50 years significant improvement in the prognosis for growth & final height in children with diabetes has been achieved. **this study aimed in our study to assess the effect of diabetes on final height in Libyan children treated for the disease. **200 Libyan children with type 1 diabetes were selected randomly (88 male & 112 female) who were treated and being followed up in our centre from the onset of their diabetes till they have finished their growth and achieved final adult height. this study was performed in order to evaluate the effect of duration of diabetes, insulin dose, and glycemic control on final height. the effect of associated autoimmune diseases was analyzed, so also the effect of diabetic complications. **Modern diabetes care, and thorough education with new insulin regimens therapy, might improve metabolic control in patients with type 1 diabetes, and substantially improved the prognosis for growth & final height. 53
