Dr. Arun K Baksi
Secretary General – Diabetes Asia Study Group
Dr Baksi is an Emeritus Consultant Physician at the Isle of Wight NHS
Primary Care Trust in the UK. He has dedicated over 30 years of his career
to improving care for diabetes patients and led the development and
opening of a purpose-built £250,000 diabetes centre in the Isle of Wight in
1991, which was also named after him on his retirement.
Dr Baksi has been instrumental in raising the profile of diabetes both in
the UK and internationally. He launched the first national multidisciplinary
conference on diabetes education in the UK. He served in various roles on
the Diabetes Education Study Group of the European Association for the
Study of Diabetes for many years as a committee member, including a spell as its treasurer. Dr Baksi
is also the founder editor of Practical Diabetes International, a publication with international reach
of 17,000.
Dr Baksi has had a distinguished career as a physician and was the recipient of The Outstanding
Achiever of the Year award in 2003, granted by the Department of Health, UK.

Dr Senan Devendra MBChB MD MRCP
Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Obtained MBChB at Liverpool in 1994. Trained
with the professorial metabolic bone and endocrine unit as a SHO in Liverpool
(1994-98). Admitted, Member to the Royal College of Physicians in 1997. Clinical
Lecturer in Medicine at the Peninsula Medical School (1998-2002). Doctorate
in Medicine, area of research interest autoantibody utility in type 1 diabetes.
Post doctoral fellowship in autoimmunity (2002-04) in Prof. George Eisenbarth’s
(2009 Banting medal recipient) lab in Denver, Colorado. Previous position was as
a consultant endocrinologist at the Hammersmith Hospital (2004) and currently
consultant endocrinologist/community diabetologist at NHS Brent & Central
Middlesex Hospital (since 2005). Head of research unit for Diabetes in Brent. Teaching interest served as
Senior Lecturer at Imperial College. Scientific research interest served as visiting clinical scientist at University
College Denver. Clinical interest is in “diabetes & ethnicity” and autoimmunity.
Recipient of the Diabetes UK education award in 2008 and 2009 and the EASD Education award in 2008 for
pioneering education for people with diabetes during the month of Ramadan.
