My LUx BOOK 101
The natural inclusions in coloured gemstones are signs of
their individuality. They tell the story of the stone’s creation.
Eduard Josef Gübelin described this once, in the middle of
the last century, as the soul of a precious stone; he recorded
the most beautiful examples in the form of impressive photographs.
As a gemmologist and the developer of today’s form
of the company’s gemmological laboratory, he transferred
his knowledge and passion for coloured gemstones and his
pioneer spirit that consistently drove him, to his employees.
Today Gübelin is present and well-known internationally and
continues to be inspired by gemstones.
“Eduard Josef Gübelin’s beautiful photographs and wonderfully
worded descriptions open up new worlds in a poetical way.
Gübelin’s designers take their inspiration from the interiors of
coloured gemstones, so that each piece of jewellery recalls an
element of nature,” says Raphael Gübelin, CEO of Gübelin and
a member of the sixth generation of the family to lead the firm.
These new worlds are at one and the same time Gübelin’s new
collections and the catalyst for its future creations. The Glowing
Jellyfish line from the Deep Sea world, for instance, is based
on a platinum ring with an untreated oval sapphire, four dropshape
sapphires from Kashmir as well as eight drop-shape diamonds
and 82 brilliant-cut diamonds.
The line is made up of various gemstone colours, just like in the
underwater world. No matter which gem from the Deep Sea,
Mystical Garden or Glowing Fire worlds is at the centre, all of
Gübelin’s pieces feature a small ruby - for many, the true king
of gems and a symbol of passion and love. For Gübelin the ruby
stands for the firm’s passion for both beauty and knowledge, as
well as for the fact that Gübelin jewellery design is always inspired
by the interior of the stone.
The Swiss family-run Gübelin has been synonymous
with exquisite jewellery, its expertise in precious
stones and luxury watches for over 160 years.
Now managed in the sixth generation, their global
success is based on consistent striving for beauty,
knowledge and the belief in true handicrafts. The
Jewellery Atelier, the gemmological laboratory and
the Gübelin Academy are Gübelin’s particular keystones,
in addition to ten national and international
boutiques.
