My LUx BOOK 79 What effect did winning the Pritzker Prize have on you personally and on your work? Ando: It was and remains today an honour to be a previous laureate. Mayne: The prize is to date the highest accolade that I have received in my life. I could never have imagined winning. It enriched my work and made me known to a broader range of clientele. Not only guests reside in the Park Hyatt Zurich, but also 90 contemporary works of art. What does contemporary art mean to you? Ando: Good contemporary works of art form the basis for ideas, which are far removed from every form of imagination. Is there one aspect for you that is particularly important regarding the architecture of the Hyatt Hotels? Ando: I have stayed in the group’s hotels all over the world and I find it particularly appealing that each hotel has its own completely individual features that are in keeping with their location. When working on a project, I personally try to interpret the identity of the location in my architecture. I am delighted when I see how well the Hyatt Hotels put this requirement into practice. “Freedom is more important today than beauty. Because the greatest joy in architecture is when you can think freely and at the same time logically.” Thom Mayne THom mayne At 72 years of age, Mayne still refers to himself as the Bad Boy of architecture. His architecture, consisting mainly of complex geometrical forms is not the only think that has earned him international recognition, but also his explosive temperament. In 1987, he received the rome Prize from the Italian American Academy and in 2005 the „Pritzker-Preis“ Pritzker Architecture Prize. He has been a member of the National Academy of Design since 1994 and was honoured with acceptance into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008. He still works in his architectural offi ce, Morphosis, which he established in 1972. www.morphosis.com Tadao ando Tadao Ando, born in Osaka in 1941, is an autodidact and opened up his first studio in 1969 without any form of study or vocational training in the architectural sector. His buildings live from minimalism and he prefers to work with concrete and wood. He is the best-known living Japanese architect worldwide and teaches in universities in Bulgaria, Japan and in the USA. The project Umi-no-Mori in Tokyo is one of his best-known projects. The man-made island, which was once used as a waste dump is to be transformed into an extensive nature reserve. It is expected to be completed in 2036; several areas will be opened beforehand. In the course of the <strong>Summer</strong> Olympics 2020 a section of the equestrian events will be held here. www.tadao-ando.com
