overlooked. The warmth of the material is enhanced by the lighting
effects and makes the copper react like a chameleon.
Mr Röllin, as an art historian you have a unique perspective.
What were your first impressions of “Network”?
I have been following Martina Vontobel’s work since the nineties so
I was already familiar with her shift towards textiles and this incredible
consolidation of fine materials. The most surprising thing for
me was that the installation seems to be optically moving. Something
that we generally only experience in kinetic art.
How would the dynamic of the piece translate into a musical
context?
On a purely optical level, it is actually strongly reminiscent of a
string instrument, for example a cembalo or a harpsicord. For
someone with a more impulsive emotion it could embody a work
from Sergej Wassiljewitsch Rachmaninow. I would say that „Network“
is an instrument and the music is created by the numerous
people, who view it.
Mr van der Ree, you have gained this magnificent, new piece –
is this a continuation of the artistic tradition of your company?
We consider it a wonderful addition to our collection, which, including
„Network“, now consists of 92 works of art by renowned
artists from classical modernism to the present day. The collaboration
with Martina Vontobel was a process lasting several months
and when I see what has emerged and how many compliments we
receive, I am delighted.
