The Peterstown House is a 150-year-old building refurbished and restored as a museum. It was a stage coach<br />
stop on the Kaskaskia Trail. Peterstown was the name given to the northern portion <strong>of</strong> the town.<br />

A modern recreation <strong>of</strong> the original Piasa Bird, a petroglyph (a prehistoric carving gouged into a rock surface).<br />
According to legend, before the Europeans arrived in the Riverbend area, the Piasa (pronounced Pie-a-saw)<br />
was a bird-like creature that terrorized local Native American tribes. Father Jacques Marquette recorded his<br />
fearful impression <strong>of</strong> the rock paintings in his journal.<br />
Robert P. Wadlow Gravesite<br />

Burial place <strong>of</strong> Alton native Robert Wadlow , the World’s Tallest Man. He was born in Alton on February 22,<br />
1918, a completely normal baby, 8 ½ pounds. At the time <strong>of</strong> his death in 1940, he was 8 feet and 11.1 inches<br />
tall and weighed 439 pounds making him the world’s tallest person in history, according to the Guinness Book<br />
<strong>of</strong> Records.<br />

toys, dolls, & children’s furniture is <strong>of</strong> special interest. Rotating displays <strong>of</strong> clothing and miscellaneous items<br />
are in an upstairs exhibit room. <strong>Tours</strong> are available upon reservation.<br />
