Legend has it that General William Clark, who founded Paducah, named it in honor <strong>of</strong> the “Padouca” tribe, a<br />

subtribe <strong>of</strong> the Chickasaw who lived and hunted in the area.<br />

Civil War Walking Tour<br />

Get a sense <strong>of</strong> the important role that Paducah played during the Civil War. The tour map is based on one<br />

drawn in 1861 by a Federal captain who was among the troops occupying Paducah by order <strong>of</strong> Gen. U.S.<br />

Grant. The eight sites are scattered throughout downtown Paducah, based around U.S. 45 and U.S. 60.<br />

Columbus-Belmont Museum<br />

Located in Columbus-Belmont State Park, the museum houses four Civil War galleries in a former soldiers’<br />

infirmary. The park itself was the site <strong>of</strong> the 1861 Battle <strong>of</strong> Belmont.<br />

The museum presents the history <strong>of</strong> the units that have been assigned to Fort Campbell, including the 101 st<br />

Airborne Division Air Assault, known as the “Screaming Eagles.”<br />
