Robert W. Hamilton House<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the oldest houses in Jackson County, the Hamilton House was built in 1867. This example <strong>of</strong> Gothic<br />

architectural style is the new home <strong>of</strong> the Murphysboro Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce.<br />

The Robinson Stewart House<br />

The Robinson-Stewart House, the oldest residence in Carmi, once belonged to U.S. senator from <strong>Illinois</strong>, John<br />

Robinson. Built 1814, the house today is a "living" museum operated by the White County Historical Society.<br />

Saline County Museum<br />

This museum is part <strong>of</strong> the Saline Creek Pioneer Village and is on the National Register <strong>of</strong> Historic Places.<br />

Housed in the former county poor house are historical items such as Robert Ingersolls desk, a letter from<br />

William Jenning Bryan, an 1853 newspaper telling <strong>of</strong> the Trail <strong>of</strong> Tears and much more.<br />

The Schlosser Home<br />

An unrestored turn-<strong>of</strong>-the-century harness shop, commercial laundry, home, and more <strong>of</strong>fer a glimpse <strong>of</strong> the<br />

daily life <strong>of</strong> middle class America in the early days <strong>of</strong> this century.<br />

Silkwood Inn Museum<br />

This inn, built in 1827, has been restored and furnished by the Mulkeytown Area Historical Society. It is the<br />

only remaining structure along the old Shawneetown-Kaskaskia Trail that connected <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong><br />

communities in the early 1800's. Exhibits depict life in rural <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> in the 1800s.<br />
