Responsibility at Finavia A part of society Safety Staff wellbeing Environmental responsibility GRI Air quality at Helsinki Airport We are continuously monitoring air quality in the airport area, as part of the air quality measurement programme in the Helsinki region. We also make our own measurements on a regular basis. Air quality measurement points in 2016 and the results on the map NO 2 concentration 3 month average Most of the total emissions in the airport area are generated by aircrafts, however, these emissions are rapidly diluted as emissions heights increase. Their impact on ground-level air quality is low. The impact of ground-level emission sources on regional air quality is higher. Nitrogen dioxide levels were measured for three months at 22 measurement points between October and December 2016. The measurements were performed using passive samplers. A similar three-month measurement (at the same time and in roughly the same measurement points) had been carried out in 2006 and 2011. Air quality has improved in all measurement points, compared with 2011. The highest concentrations were measured outside the airport area in front of Terminal 2 and at the intersection of the road leading to the airport, where there is a large amount of vehicle traffic. The highest concentrations within airport boundaries were measured at the aircraft ramps, where there is a large amount of taxiing and ground handling traffic. Close to the runways, the concentrations were under 20 lug/m 3 . There has been a substantial improvement in air quality in front of Terminal 2 after the start of the train services, as there is now less bus and coach traffic in the area. Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority will measure nitrogen dioxide and particles in the vicinity of Terminal 1 throughout the year 2017. The emissions are limited to the areas adjacent to the airport Finavia took part in the survey on the spread of emissions in the Helsinki region carried out by the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The spread of emissions generated by vehicle traffic, energy production and vessel and air traffic were presented in the survey. Nitrogen dioxide emissions generated by air traffic and airport operations have a local impact on air quality and it is mostly limited to the airport area and areas adjacent to it. Nitrogen oxide concentrations (lug/m 3 ) at the Helsinki Airport area according to passive sampler measurements carried out in October–December 2016. The results have been compared with the annual limit value set for nitrogen dioxide (40 lug/m 3 ). Responsibility report 2016 59
