The sequel to Remembering Elephants is once again the brainchild of wildlife photographer Margot Raggett, with the support of the Born Free Foundation. Margot has already raised funding through Kickstarter, so 100 percent of the book’s cover price will be going to projects that protect rhinos in Africa and Asia. The book features images from 65 of the world’s best wildlife photographers, including Frans Lanting, Marsel van Oosten and Steve Winter, working under the banner of ‘Wildlife Photographers United’. In issue 189 we joined with Margot to launch the Remembering Rhinos competition, which presented the opportunity for 10 winning photographers to see their work printed in the book as part of the remarkable line-up. Over 1,000 entries were received from photographers all over the globe, and they included images of white, black and greater one-horned rhinos. The judges, including our very own editor Ben Brain, were looking for pictures taken in the wild that were true to the original scene and had minimal editing. Most importantly, they had to be photographs that could help tell a story of the animals’ lives. The finalists were eventually whittled down to 10 winners and 11 images (with two images from one photographer making the cut). And here they are. Very well done to all – we’re particularly impressed with the variety of approaches on display.
