t
is for Tripod
Take a tripod with you on
every trip. Your threelegged
friend is the most
creative accessory in the photo arsenal.
Pin-sharp shots, long exposures,
low-light images, careful composition
and pics with a large depth of field are
all made possible with a set of sticks.
There’s no substitute. But many
photographers baulk at the bulk,
weight and general hassle that comes
with carrying a tripod.
If you’re one of these, then don’t think
about what kind of tripod you’ll ideally
need: think instead about what tripod
you’d be prepared to carry as a standard
item in your kit. The best and most
versatile will always be a full-size model,
but there are alternatives that weigh less
and take up less space. A mini-tripod
is so small and light that you’ll barely
notice you’ve got it. Just make sure it
can support the weight of your camera
and lenses. To gain height, you’ll need to
place it on something, but perched on a
table, a wall, or a car, it will open up lots
of photo opportunities.
Next up the scale is a ‘travel’ tripod –
typically a shorter, lighter version of
a full-size model. These can be used
independently, but again, make sure it
can take the weight of your camera in
both horizontal and vertical positions.
Once you’ve picked your tripod, if
you’re pushed for suitcase space, then
find something else to leave behind
– like extra clothes or spare shoes.
And when you’re out and about at
your destination, always take your tripod
with you. It’ll be of no use if you leave it in
your hotel room, so learn to see your
tripod as an extension of your camera
rather than an optional accessory. You
won’t regret it!
