On mainframe systems, one of the following subcodes may be used:

Syntax error in format buffer; possible premature end of buffer segment.
Syntax error in the format buffer -- bad first or second character of field name or
missing "/".
Text literal has no ending quote or is too long (more than 255 characters).
Text literal is empty.
Expected delimiter missing.
Conditional format criterion has no closing parentheses ")".
The conditional format criterion is empty.
Invalid field name, format, or search operator.
One of the following occurred:
■ An invalid edit mask number (greater than 15) was specified.
■ A syntax error in the conditional format criteron was found.
■ Multiple format buffer segments are specified with conditional format criterion.
Invalid character following field name specification.
Invalid index specification for MU field in PE group.
Expected number missing or too large (>=2 31 ).
Syntax error in LOB segment specification.
Syntax error in L element specification.
Syntax error in D element specification (daylight savings time indicator).
Invalid Date-Time edit mask specification.
MU/PE index range specification invalid for LOB segment notation.
On mainframe systems, the following information is returned in the Additions 2 field of the
control block:
■ The leftmost two bytes contain the two characters being inspected when the error was
detected.
■ The rightmost two bytes contain the subcode.
