Waikato entries vie for
World of WearableArt Awards
Three Waikato designers are finalists in
the World of WearableArt Awards Show in
Wellington starting in late September.
There are 48 finalist garments
from New Zealand,
four of which are by
three designers from Waikato:
Jenny Jack of Tamahere in
her fourth year as a finalist since
2014 has two garments entered
this year.
Lisa Vanin from Cambridge
has one entry this year making
it her third finalist entry since
2014.
Meanwhile Darren Wise of
Rukuhia has his first finalist entry
this year.
Over all World of WearableArt
(WOW®) has confirmed
that 103 finalist garments
by 121 designers from 14
countries around the world will
compete for the 2017 Awards.
The finalist garments will be
WAIKATO BUSINESS NEWS July/August 2017
showcased in the WOW Awards
Show in Wellington from September
21 to October 8.
Now in its 29th year,
WOW’s combination of an international
design competition
inside a spectacular stage production
is New Zealand’s single
largest annual theatrical production
and a must-see event for
close to 60,000 people every
year.
WOW chief executive
Gisella Carr says, “WOW’s international
reach is becoming
more and more evident, something
we’ve worked hard to
achieve, while at the same time
retaining its unique New Zealand
heart. Each year, WOW
continues to attract an exciting
number and range of designers
due to the high awareness
of the WOW brand, designers’
own networks, and WOW’s
work with tertiary institutions
around the globe. Many people
may not realise just how many
of our international designers
come to Wellington in September,
taking part in WOW’s Designer
Programme, and further
strengthening WOW’s international
network.
“We encourage and celebrate
a huge range of diversity in our
designers, from those with professional
training and careers, to
those who start with a gem of an
idea, and have the courage, tenacity
and sheer determination
to create something extraordinary
outside of their own field.
On stage, we see the work of
international fashion designers,
artists from the creative and industrial
sectors, alongside students
and first-time enthusiasts.
This incredible cross-section
of entrants is not only reflected
in how the garments look,
but also in their materials and
construction, with every year
bringing explorations into new
techniques.”
The 103 finalist garments
will now compete for awards
across six sections: three recurrent
sections – Aotearoa New
Zealand, Open and Avant-Garde;
and three sections with
design briefs specific to 2017
– Red, Illumination Illusion:
Float, Fly, Flow, and Weta
Workshop Costume & Film:
Science Fiction.
For WOW 2017 Show Director
Kip Chapman, the first
round of judging was also the
first opportunity for him to see
the 2017 finalists, “Now that
I’ve seen all the garments, it’s
absolutely ‘game on’ time!
Each WOW Show must be
completely unique and needs
more than a year in the planning.
My creative team has
been working alongside the
production team on the staging,
lighting and music, and how
the overall show will look since
before last year’s show closed.
And now, finally, I have my cast
of incredible garments. Bringing
all the components together
is like an enormous puzzle, and
I know the 2017 show is going
to be amazing. I can’t wait for
opening night!”
The first round of judging by
WOW’s 2017 competition judges
Dame Suzie Moncrieff, fash-
37
ion designer and artist Kerrie
Hughes and artist Michel Tuffery
took place at the National
WOW Museum in Nelson from
July 7-9 2017. The finalist garments
will now go through two
further stages of judging, where
they are assessed on stage, in
motion. At this point the judging
panel will be joined by
Sir Richard Taylor from Weta
Workshop and Valérie Desjardins
from Cirque du Soleil, who
will judge specific sections and
awards. The finalists will be
seen in performance by the public
at the WOW Awards Show
from September 21 to October 8
before they move to the National
WOW Museum for an exhibition,
opening in December.
Of the 103 finalist garments,
48 are by 61 New Zealand designers,
working as individuals
or in collaboration.
The Nation’s tastiest
steak has been named
New Zealand’s most
tender and tasty steak
was announced at the
Beef + Lamb New Zealand
Steak of Origin competition
awards dinner, held in July in
association with PGG Wrightson.
Tim and Kelly Brittain
from Otorohanga have been
awarded the 2017 Grand
Champion title for their Angus
steak, in the competitions
15th year. Being recognised
as the country's top beef
producer is an achievement
Tim and Kelly are extremely
proud of.
The panel of judges, including
renowned chefs, Ben
Bayly, Gareth Stewart and
Shaun Clouston completed
two rounds of judging before
the Brittains’ steak was
deemed the county’s top
from an initial line-up of 64
semi-finalists.
Chef judge, Shaun Clouston
recognises the way in
which this competition shines
light on the country’s beef
farmers, acknowledging that
the high quality of beef within
the New Zealand food service
is down to their fine-tuned
farming activities.
“The paddock to plate link
is one that New Zealanders
are really interested in. It is
important for us chefs to appreciate
this and understand
that an outstanding steak dish
and dining experience starts
well before the restaurant
kitchen,” says Shaun.
Before the judging day,
scientists at Carne technologies
tested all 305 of the competition
entries to determine
the top 20 percent in each
competition class to progress
through to judging.
The two rounds of judging
had the chefs assess each
steak against a set of criteria
such as aroma, tenderness,
juiciness and taste. The first
round of judging determined
the medal placings in each
class, results which were also
announced at the awards dinner.
From here the gold medal
winning steaks in each class,
excluding Lifestyle, were
re-judged to decide the 2017
Grand Champion and the
2017 Brand winner.
The competition’s six Best
of Breed classes were open to
all New Zealand beef farmers
and included classes for European,
British Angus, British
Hereford, British Other and
Crossbreeds and a class for
Lifestyle farmers. The Best of
Brand competition included a
class for retailers and a class
for wholesalers and foodservice
suppliers.
The 2017 Brand winner
was also announced with
Countdown taking home the
title with their Countdown
Angus brand and the Processor
of the 2017 Grand Champion
was Auckland Meat Processors/Wilson
Hellaby.
The competition is sponsored
by PGG Wrightson and
supported by AFFCO Moerewa,
