58 WAIKATO BUSINESS NEWS July/August 2017 New Flex Fitness perfect for city workforce A new vibrant fitness centre in the heart of Hamilton’s CBD provides the city’s workforce with a quality training environment where they can exercise close to their workplace. By GEOFF TAYLOR Since its opening just over three months ago, membership is growing fast at the new Flex Fitness Hamilton CBD on Winger Subaru’s former site in Anglesea St. Flex Fitness CBD is one of 12 clubs within what is the fastest growing gym franchise in the country. Planned growth see’s six more clubs opening by year end. Owner Tony Tracey, who in three years built up his other Flex Fitness club based in Morrinsville into a busy, profitable community hub. He is ex- cited about the Hamilton CBD location on a street which sees 12,000 vehicles a day. He’s already noticed that the new gym has become a ‘go to’ place for CBD employees during the day. “It is really a destination site where workers come either during their lunch breaks or before or after work. I’ve noticed it’s quieter in the evenings so people are often working out here before they leave the CBD each evening.” Tony says Flex Fitness Hamilton CBD is benefiting from the convenience it offers those working in the city, many of whom enjoy a boutique-style environment which is a bit different than the usual gym. My focus is always on the people, creating a culture and vibe that draws people together to train in a positive, supportive environment. He aims to work closely with corporates, more of whom are implementing wellness packages for their staff as they see the value of ensuring employees are active and have ways to unwind and de-stress. “We are keen to work with businesses who may be wanting to subsidise staff memberships at Flex Fitness Hamilton CBD,” says Tony. Tony enjoys the atmosphere and culture of Flex Fitness which he says is different from the sterile, sameness some gyms offer. It’s a really cool architecturally designed building by Noel Jessop with a lot of natural light. I don’t think there’s any other gym in New Zealand that has as much natural light. It’s quite unique. I’m very proud of the fact that Flex Fitness Hamilton CBD looks this good. Flex Fitness Hamilton CBD is the only club in Hamilton that is an official Hammer Strength training facility which we are proud of, we choose equipment not seen in other clubs in Waikato yet. “I like to think of Flex Fitness as a bit more boutique and classy. There’s a very different feel the moment you walk in and there’s a central area where members can come and mingle and have a drink before and after workouts. Members can truly feel at home.” He says the gym plans to customise the experience even more by providing meals and smoothies for members. Membership of the 24-hour facility allows clients to train at other Flex Fitness establishments. Tony says his experience at Flex Fitness in Morrinsville has helped him create a winning team. “Having an awesome team of people around me there was the key to success at Morrinsville’s Flex Fitness so I’m following the same formula here.” The team includes, club manager Erin Herbert, former Fastlane Fitness manager George Edmonds. George is certified in Zuu & Anchor Training which emphasises use of your own body weight and movement rather than traditional gym equipment and is seen as the next big thing in fitness. Personal trainer Brian Liu who Tony believes offers a positive experience for Chinese members that traditionally haven’t been big gym goers due to the language barrier they can face. He is newly qualified and very eager and passionate. Sarah Browne and Kellee Henton make up the personal training team, both having worked in other Flex Fitness clubs before joining Flex CBD so are adverse with how our clubs function. Tony says Flex Fitness Hamilton CBD offers free trials, giving people a chance to come and train in the environment. “I hope once people get to experience the unique culture here they’ll join up,” he says. “We are not all about volume at Flex Fitness, creating a workout space which members can all achieve their set goals is the aim. Fieldays a focus for international trade Delegations from nearly 20 countries are coming to June’s National Agricultural Fieldays as the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural event underlines its reputation as an essential tool in the country’s trade relationships. T By GEOFF TAYLOR he 49th Fieldays at Mystery Creek is gearing up to be another massive event following on from last year when despite very tough economic conditions for dairying, Fieldays attracted its second highest attendance ever. Many of the 1100 exhibitors have begun the often significant job of erecting sites and New Zealand National Fieldays Society chief executive Peter Nation says staff have inducted more than 7000 tradespeople to work on the 114 hectare property. Meanwhile volunteer numbers have been expanded this year to nearly 300 for the June 14 event. Fieldays’ theme this year is “Leading Change” and one vital element of that is leveraging off Fieldays’ international representation, says Peter. “We have nearly 20 countries coming to exhibit or visit.” He says this includes a AgriBusiness News United Kingdom delegation which has extra significance in the post-Brexit era, while the many other delegations include teams from Mexican and Vietnam. “Meanwhile China is bringing out two or three large trade missions and the Koreans are putting two entries into the Innovation Centre.” “Trade missions are looking at either distribution in or distribution out so the platform of Fieldays enables willing buyers and sellers to come together and form trade relationships. That is why we have the International Business Centre.” The theme “Leading Change” relates to Fieldays’ two underling goals which are growing agriculture through innovation, internationalisation and education and bringing town and country closer together.
