Whiteley does a Yuvi,
hits six sixes in one over
WEST INDIES GREAT GARRY SOBERS WAS THE FIRST BATSMAN TO HIT
SIX SIXES IN AN OVER IN FIRST-CLASS CRICKET
LONDON: Worcestershire’s Ross Whiteley hit six sixes in an
over on Sunday to join a select group who’ve performed the feat
in senior cricket. Whiteley struck Yorkshire left-arm spinner Karl
Carver for six sixes during the 16th over of Worcestershire’s
innings in an English Twenty20 match at Headingley.
But Worcestershire lost by 37 runs after Yorkshire’s David
Willey made a careerbest 118. West Indies great Garry Sobers
was the first batsman to hit six sixes in an over in first-class
cricket when, playing for Nottinghamshire, he performed the feat
against Glamorgan’s Malcolm Nash in a County Championship
match at Swansea in 1968. Only three other cricketers have hit
six sixes in an over after Sobers’ feat. Ravi Shastri was the other
batsman to have achieved this feat when he hit six
sixes in one over of Tilak Raj in a Ranji Trophy
match between Mumbai and Baroda in 1985. Yuvraj
Singh was the first to achieve it in a Twenty20 international
when he hammered Stuart Broad for six sixes
in an over in the 2007 World T20 against England in
Durban.
South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs also achieved the
feat of hitting six sixes in an over when he
destroyed Dan van Bunge in the 2007 World
Cup clash between South Africa and
Netherlands.
Wednesbury bank robber Jailed and
Hero rewarded for his bravery
Om Bhatia who courageously
snatched a hammer from a hooded bank
robber's grip has been rewarded for his
bravery. He tackled drug addict Brian
Maughan to the floor, forcing the weapon
from his hand as others frantically looked
on during the terrifying robbery. The
martial arts expert, who runs Walsall
DIY in West Bromwich Street, is set to
receive £200 for taking on the crook at
Wednesbury's Lloyds Bank. Sitting at Birmingham
Crown Court on Friday, Judge Paul Farrer QC
praised the father-of-four for valiantly stepping in
during the ordeal. He added: "Om Bhatia plainly
acted in an extremely courageous way and in doing
so, placed himself in considerable personal risk.
He deserves recognition for that."
Maughan was locked up for six
years for robbing the Walsall Street
branch as well as Ladbrokes at The
Arcadian, Birmingham. The court
heard the robber strolled into the bank,
donning a grey hooded jacket, before
threatening branch manager Elaine
Grimley while brandishing the claw
hammer.
The 26-year-old forced her to hand over £300
before demanding more cash from the petrified
woman on April 27. Mr Bhatia, who was standing
at the counter, then bravely jumped in and wrestled
the weapon away from the unsuspecting criminal
before onlookers tripped Maughan up.
Turmeric can be used to fight cancer
in children, find US scientists
Bengaluru : Medical scientists in
the US have found yet another use for
curcumin, the bioactive component of
turmeric that is widely used in Indian
cuisine, this time to cure cancer in children.
Researchers at Nemours
Children's Hospital and the University
of Central Florida (UCF) have found
that nanoparticles loaded with curcumin
can offer a novel treatment to target and
destroy neuroblastoma tumour cells.
Neuroblastoma is the most common
cancer in children younger than
five years old. High-risk neuroblastoma
can be resistant to traditional therapy,
and survival can be poor. The cancers
start in early nerve cells and commonly
form in the tissue of the adrenal glands,
near the kidneys. They are also associated
with developmental delays, hearing
loss, or other disabilities even after
traditional treatments have ended. In
their study, the researchers attached curcumin
to cerium oxide nanoparticles
and tested the nano-curcumin formulation
in cell lines of a high-risk form of
neuroblastoma. "This formulation
induced substantial cell death in neuroblastoma
cells while producing no or
only minor toxicity in healthy cells,"
says their report in the journal
Nanoscale. Curcumin has been shown
to have substantial anti-cancer ability,
but its low solubility and poor stability
have restricted its use in therapeutic
applications. According to a statement
from UCF, the study conducted by its
scientists demonstrates a novel method
of treating this tumour "without the toxicity
of aggressive therapy" and shows
that nanoparticles can be "an effective
delivery vehicle" for cancer drugs.
JD-U-BJP alliance
unfortunate, says Sharad Yadav
New Delhi : Breaking his silence
on the JD-U's new tie-up with the
BJP in Bihar, senior Janata Dal-
United leader Sharad
Yadav on Monday
described it as "unfortunate"
and said he
did not agree with the
decision taken by JD-
U President and Bihar Chief
Minister Nitish Kumar. "I don't
agree with the decision in Bihar. It
is unfortunate," Yadav told
reporters outside Parliament. "The
mandate of the people (2015 Bihar
assembly polls) was not for this,"
the Rajya Sabha member said on
the JD-U breaking its alliance the
Grand Alliance of RJD and
Congress in the state.
The last of the Khalsa
Football Federation Football
Tournament of 2017 was held at
Shobnall Leisure Complex,
Shobnall Road, Burton-upon-
Trent on 29 and 30 July in which
52 senior teams and 39 junior
teams participated. It was
watched by thousands of football
fans. In the Junior Section,
Smethwick FC were winners of
the Under 8s and Punjab United
Derby won the Under 11 group.
The overall winners of all the 5
tournaments of the Under 13s
were Punjab United Derby and
Under 15s overall winners were
Sikh Hunters. GNG Leicester
Panthers Under 9s played particularly
well in all the tournaments
and won the first tournament
at Walsall, then Leicester,
Derby, Birmingham and Burton.
In the Senior section GSA Res.
won the Division 1 final. The
final of the Premier Division
began at 3.30 pm and was
played by Khalsa Sports West
Brom and F C Khalsa Leicester
- both teams contesting their
second Premier Division final
as West Brom were finalists at
the Walsall tournament and F C
Khalsa were runners-up at
Derby. The East Midland side
went into the lead after just 8
minutes and West Brom
equalised 17 minutes later who
also scored 7 minutes after the
2nd half started which turned
out to be the winning goal. The
referee's final whistle sent their
players, supporters and management
jumping up and down
with great happiness and
excitement. It was very disappointing
that the Premier
Division final was not watched
for most of the match by the
official organisers of the tournament.
GSA were the only
team to win two Premier
Division finals - at Walsall and
Birmingham and were also the
finalists at Leicester. Greg
from Derbyshire who has been
to nearly 3000 football grounds
commented " I am very
impressed with the organisation,
quality of football played
and the friendly atmosphere at
these tournaments.
So that even greater number
of football fans watch these
great tournaments there needs
to be extra media coverage in
newspapers such as Samaj
weekly which is published in
English and Punjabi.
