KNA Nightingale Chapter<br />

As Frank Sinatra once sang, “It was a very good year.” The Nightingale Chapter became<br />
three years of age in November, 2016. Thanks to those who established and maintained the<br />
Chapter over three years! The Nightingale Chapter meetings for 2016-<strong>2017</strong> are the second<br />
Thursdays of March, May, August, and October. The <strong>2017</strong> meetings are held at Ephraim<br />
McDowell Health in Danville, <strong>KY</strong>. Highlights of the past year include:<br />
Leadership:<br />
• Pat Calico, Charlene Maddox, and Denise Alvey attended the January, <strong>2017</strong> KNA<br />
Leadership retreat at My Old Kentucky Home. KNA Vision, Mission, and Core Values<br />
were developed.<br />
Facebook Page:<br />
• A Nightingale Chapter Facebook page was also an outcome of the KNA leadership<br />
meeting. Thanks to Michelle Lasley, KNA Communications Director, for her assistance<br />
in the Facebook page development. Like us on Facebook at KNA Nightingale Chapter.<br />
Scholarship Award:<br />
• The Spring, <strong>2017</strong> nursing student scholarship was awarded to Jeanette Rogers, a<br />
Nightingale Chapter member and a DNP student at Capella University.<br />
• Applications for the Fall, <strong>2017</strong> Scholarship are invited by September 28, <strong>2017</strong>. Details<br />

Nurse Week Display:<br />
• For the May, <strong>2017</strong> meeting, Charlene Maddox and Denise Alvey prepared a great Nurse<br />
Week display featuring past Chapter events and current ANA Year of the Healthy Nurse<br />
programs.<br />
Contact Hours Awarded for Meeting Continuing Education Programs:<br />
• Year of the Healthy Nurse: Pat Calico, PhD, RN presented an overview of the ANA Year<br />
of the Healthy Nurse initiatives. At the May <strong>2017</strong> meeting we took the Healthy Nurse<br />
Nutrition challenge with a meal of soup and salad.<br />
• Silent Epidemic of Farmer Suicide: Deborah B. Reed, PhD, MSPH, RN, FAAOHN, FAAN,<br />
Professor & Endowed Chair Community Health Nursing, University of Kentucky College<br />
of Nursing presented an engaging program on the Silent Epidemic of Farmer Suicide<br />
and the role of nurses in supporting our farm families. Nightingale Chapter members<br />
and Faith Community <strong>Nurses</strong> participated in an informative discussion.<br />
Publicity:<br />
• Gwyneth Pyle attended the Career Fair at Somerset Community College to publicize<br />
ANA, KNA, and the Nightingale Chapter student scholarship.<br />
