RE-ALIGNING THE CONCEPT OF LUXURY It has been a long journey for David McGoldrick from his first job after graduating Technical Collage at the Mercedes Benz and BMW workshops in Liverpool to his current job as newly appointed General Manager at Euro Motors. In this interview with Reena Abraham and Sultan Sharabaty, the automotive veteran talks about the joys of being in the car industry and the challenge now of handling five premium brands (BMW Group, Rolls Royce, Ferrari and Maserati) in a new market. How did you begin your career in the automotive industry? My first job when I left school was to work for Mercedes Benz and then BMW, both on the technical side at the workshops. This was in Liverpool, England in the early 80s. So predominantly I came from a technical background, but always desired to be a whitecollar worker. I took some career advice, went to night school and studied business administration for 3 years to get an NVQ. Following that my career took me along a number of different paths - from running my father’s taxi business and selling auto parts to financial services. Each of these experiences enabled me to understand various aspects of running a business. In 1994, I went back into the retail motor trade in the UK and I have been there ever since. Started initially with Honda and then worked through to a finance manager’s position with them. Then moved into used cars in the late 90s which was a big deal in the UK, till 2002, when I came back to BMW, my spiritual home. And I have been with BMW for almost all that time from then.
