Building <strong>play</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>back</strong><br />

Stage 2– 9v9<br />

This is stage 2 of teaching <strong>play</strong>ers how <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>build</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>back</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> previous stage,<br />

<strong>play</strong>ers were introduced <strong>to</strong> general concepts<br />

and situations that are crucial for an effective<br />

<strong>build</strong> up <strong>play</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>back</strong>. The pre-required<br />

technical components and cognitive aspects<br />

of <strong>build</strong>ing <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>back</strong> were laid down,<br />

and will serve as a starting point for his stage.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> next two years, 11 and 12 year old<br />

<strong>play</strong>ers are going <strong>to</strong> <strong>build</strong> on <strong>the</strong>se concepts<br />

and apply <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong> 9v9 game format. The<br />

training of <strong>the</strong>se aspects of development will<br />

become more complex and increase in difficulty;<br />

supported by an optimal physical and<br />

mental development of each <strong>play</strong>er.<br />

The 9v9 game format brings some additional<br />

elements of consideration in <strong>the</strong> development<br />

of <strong>build</strong>-up <strong>play</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>back</strong>.<br />

Larger field and goal size.<br />

Two extra field <strong>play</strong>ers.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> 9v9 game format, we are going <strong>to</strong><br />

use <strong>the</strong> 3-4-1 system of <strong>play</strong>. This system’s<br />

structure supports and facilitates <strong>the</strong> development<br />

of <strong>the</strong> concepts and principles outlined<br />

in <strong>the</strong> previous stage. Basically, we are<br />

adding a defender and a central midfielder<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2-3-1 formation. All <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r positions<br />

and roles remain <strong>the</strong> same. This gives<br />

<strong>play</strong>ers stability in <strong>the</strong>ir understanding and<br />

also adds elements that will slowly bring <strong>the</strong><br />

game <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 11v11 game format.<br />

These new elements will influence our teaching<br />

approach as situations become more<br />

complex and progressively comparable <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

standard 11v11 game.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> 7v7 game format, we used <strong>the</strong> 2-3-1<br />

formation. It featured two defenders in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>back</strong>, one central midfielder, two wide <strong>play</strong>ers<br />

and one striker. (Fig 5)<br />
