is no house cleaning during the first day
of the New Year, there should be less
trash too (hopefully)! If there is trash, just
make sure you have doubled the bin bags
to avoid rats or other animals going
through your garbage bins. If you do
take your trash out, it symbolises
the idea that you are throwing
away your prosperity for
the year.

Chinese New Year is a time when
everything around you is dressed up in
red. This warm colour is known to be a
harbinger of luck and prosperity. So deck
your house in red, wear red clothes and of
course, don’t forget to exchange red
angpows! Also, white or black clothes
are frowned upon as these two
colours are traditionally
associated with mourning.
BE CAREFUL
WITH GLASS
The day will be filled with food and
drinks which involve handling glass. So
be careful while having fun. This is because
if glass breaks on the first day of the New
Year, it is common to hear someone from the
family saying a few words to counter the
incident after the broken pieces are
collected. One should also wait for at
least five days before throwing the
broken pieces away! Broken
glass symbolises bad luck.
