Fashion Tiny Hands It started out as a hobby during her secondary schooling years in Malaysia, but little did now US-based Malaysian jewellery maker, Pak Han Mei would realise that her penchant for creating jewellery with miniature food items would adorn many including American actor, Amy Poehler on hit TV series, Parks and Recreation. 32
Fashion On 2 February 2012, the episode titled 'Operation Ann' from American TV series Parks and Recreation was aired on NBC in the United States. In that episode, Amy Poehler wore a satin dress and looked stunning but it was the necklace she wore on that episode that stole the hearts of many and continues to do so till this very day. That necklace she wore was an 18 inch sterling silver ball chain that came with a scented waffle necklace pendant. The waffle even had two knobs of butter and a glossy maple syrup finish. The maker of this whimsical necklace is none other than one of our very own, 27-year-old Pak Han Mei. "Tiny Hands started as a hobby when I was in secondary school. My mom and I had taken a jewellery making class together and we both went crazy making different trinkets. This was around the same time I saw that you could sell things online on blogs. The jewellery was piling up with nowhere to go, so I thought about starting our own online shop to sell our work. I set up a LiveJournal account, created a logo using PaintShop Pro, took photos of our jewellery and posted them online." Han Mei's fascination with tiny things since she was a child is what sparked her inspiration for Tiny Hands. She said, "Around the inception of Tiny Hands, I had been looking at other people's blogs and websites. I found a few artists that worked with polymer clay and made amazing miniature food and was totally fascinated. It brought back memories and my love for tiny things was rekindled." She said, "I was making a few sales here and there to friends I had made on message boards and forums online. I didn't have much time to dedicate to it at that time because I was still attending school and college. It wasn't until four years later when I started to see the marketing I had been doing bear fruit. I was teaching myself everything I could about how to run a business online. I went full time with Tiny Hands in 2011 after graduating from university. The business has been growing every year and now I have a remote team of nine people who work for the business." Han Mei said her team of nine people are remote independent contractors. "We communicate a lot over email and text. We've established systems online that make it easy for people to know exactly what work needs to be done without needing any micromanaging." 33
