The show will go on, well at least for two of
the three days scheduled to run it did. The
weather gods were certainly not on the side
of the international competitors at this
year’s running of The Barefoot Retreats Horse Trials.
Although they got to do their dressage tests for the
international classes, by Saturday the ground was far
too sodden and unsafe to continue.
Indie Vaughan Jones had a cracking weekend with
four horses competing and all finished in the top
nine. Firstly a win in BE100 Section D aboard Cool
Blue after posting a 29 dressage and finishing one
second over the optimum time cross country to add
0.4 to her score. Following on from their win at Great
Witchingham, Indie and Cuffesgrange Diamond
Echo took runner up spot in the BE100 Open on an
impressive total of 25.5. Her other two rides, Dinan
Gem and Cool Choice both competing in BE100
sections finished seventh and ninth respectively.
As so often seen throughout sections with multiple
rides and top placings is Ros Canter. With seven to
ride from BE100 to Intermediate it would be unusual
not to see Ros topping a leaderboard in one or more
classes. This time she won Novice section G on
Lordships Gruffalo, having scored a very smart 22.3
in the first phase. With three other top 10 finishes
too.
In the BE100u18 section, Alice Casburn had two
great results which complimented her already flying
start to the 2018 season. Alice picked up third and
sixth placings this weekend.
James Sommerville and Aoife Clark ended up on the
same score in BE100 section C but James' dressage
score being lower meant he took the top spot on
Master Ramiro. Emilie Chandler finished in third on
the Grafenstoltz sired Quick Decision III.
Nicola Wilson was on form over the two days of
competition that went ahead. Her five rides all
finished in the top ten. Beltane Queen who we
haven't seen competing since 2015 had an easy
outing around the Open Novice and fended off
her rivals with a 22.5 dressage and nothing to add
elsewhere. Nicola also finished third in this section
aboard Cooley Conker.
That wasn't to be her only victory, Annie Clover
headed the leaderboard in the Open Intermediate
section L, with a dressage of 31.1 plus 1.2 time
penalties to take the winning score to 32.3. That
particular section was extremely close with the top
14 combinations all jumping double clears.
