y Glenn Kalick, DVM PET TALK Sticky fruit Yonkers is a 4-year-old Dachshund that was brought to my hospital with swelling on the face just under the eye. Originally the owner thought that Yonkers was bitten by a wasp or bee but realized quickly that Yonkers was in the house all day. I told the owner that the type of swelling was very common with tooth root abscesses. The owner lifted the gums and I was able to see the teeth and they looked good. When the owner touched the area of swelling over the tooth his disposition changed and he was in pain. We scheduled a dental cleaning for the next day. I put Yonkers on an antibiotic and pain medication in preparation for a possible extraction. The next day Yonkers looked 50 percent better. The owner was almost ready to cancel the cleaning but remembered it was most likely from an abscessed tooth. Yonkers was put under anesthesia and I was able to do a full mouth examination of his teeth. I pressed on the swelling under his eye and a drop of pus came onto his tongue. The outside part of his molar was beautiful, so I put him on his back so I could see the inside part of the tooth and that is where I saw a large black hole in the molar. I took full mouth X-rays, and Yonkers had a large cavity on the chewing surface all the way to the root of the tooth. The tooth was actually loose and, with minimal force, I was able to extract a three-rooted tooth intact. I flushed the socket with a mild cleaner and sutured the hole. Now his mouth had a foul smell of pus, but between the extraction and the antibiotics, I had a good feeling that Yonkers would be fine in a week or so. What was interesting was that upon examination of the molar on the other side of his mouth we found and removed a chunk of sticky material on the chewing surface of the tooth. There was no cavity on the X-ray but my technician smelled the material and it smelled sweet. When the owner picked up Yonkers we showed her the X-ray. I told her that we don’t see a lot of cavities due to the fact that most dogs don’t eat a lot of sugars and the kibble and treats that they eat clean the teeth when they chew them. I asked her what other than dog food does she feed him and she said that Yonkers will eat anything but wondered if the lack of brushing caused the cavity. I asked her if she gives him anything sticky to eat. She said that she doesn’t but her husband does. She told me that her husband is a health nut and he eats dried fruits and nuts. He likes the fruit medley but refuses to eat the dried banana. He gives Yonkers the dried banana every night. Dried banana does get sticky and since Yonkers doesn’t brush his teeth the accumulation of dried, sugary, sticky banana stuck on the teeth over time probably caused the cavity. I saved the sticky material from the other tooth and could smell the banana. I told her to have her husband stop giving Yonkers the dried banana. She wanted to have something to tell her husband to get him to stop the banana chips and I handed her the tooth. A tooth with a large hole should do the trick.
