TRAVEL Vintage automobiles and antique bicycles by Bill Johnson There was a time when women just didn’t ride bicycles. Not the respectable women, anyway. After all, women back then wore long dresses, and how in the world can you lift your leg up over that confounding horizontal bar while wearing a long dress? There’s no way that could be ladylike. Fortunately for women, in the late 1880s a man named Sterling Elliott came along. He was a strong advocate for women’s rights and saw a pretty good business idea with a new market for bicycles. So ladies, next time you go for a pedal, you can say a silent “thank you” to Mr. Elliott for developing a “girl’s bike.” You know, the one without a crossbar. Elliott was an extraordinary inventor with a fascination for bicycles. He earned 104 patents, 29 of them for bicycles. 70 Among his creations was a four-wheel thing, a quadricycle with an innovative steering mechanism. At that time, wagons and buggies had rigid front axles. Elliott’s system allowed front wheels to steer independently. This led to the rack and pinion system used in cars today. It made him a wealthy man. Elliott’s bicycles are on display at the Elliott Museum in Stuart, which has been supported by his son Harmon, who provided funds for the museum to celebrate his father’s genius. Among the bicycles on display is a 4-wheel bicycle, the quadricycle, and the so-called “bone crusher” or “bone shaker.” This one has a cast iron frame and solid tires. Everything is rigid. You wouldn’t want to ride it unless you want to shake your bones. The museum is also a haven for vintage car buffs. You can feast your eyes on an early Stanley Steamer, one of the first school buses, or a large array of classic cars through the ages. More than 50 of the cars are on view in a highly unusual setting, the only one in an American museum. Cars sit in three levels of racks. They come down on a robotic tray and rotate on a turntable for your examination. At the museum, you’ll learn that the classic Stanley Steamer was JUNE 2017 more than a little inconvenient to drive. After lighting the fuel – usually kerosene – you had to pump up fuel pressure by hand. Then it took 45 minutes for the boiler to get up enough steam. But once that thing got ready to go, it was at maximum torque at a standstill and was far more powerful than an internal combustion engine. In 1896, the Stanley Steamer broke the speed record, whizzing along at 127 miles an hour. The engine had another advantage – only 13 moving parts for maintenance. Driving the steam-powered car had a serious limitation, though. Think of stopping often to resupply the water. Nonetheless, you might admire this creation at the museum. It was the big seller around the turn of the century until the internal combustion came along in the 1920s. In the mix of cars along the way, there was the electric car. That one needed a handcrank to start it, and the darn thing could spin and break your arm, which it did on occasion. A 1914 electric car is among the cars at the museum. The museum also includes various traveling exhibits, an extensive collection of signed baseball cards of interest to collectors, and more. Docents are on duty to explain various exhibits.
