FROM THE EDITOR
Happy Summer! It’s break time from school and time for
summer camp. Check out our story on summertime
activities and camps. There is plenty to do to keep from
getting bored, and there is something for everyone. Check out
your city’s website for information on what’s going on in your
local library and parks. You’d be surprised how much is out
there for the children and teens to do.
June also brings the start of hurricane season. Are you ready?
Have you procrastinated and thought you’ll just wait for the
storm to appear before getting supplies? As seen on TV, too
many Floridians do this; wait until the last-minute. Time gets
away from all of us and we may forget until the sensational
news station blares out “Thar’s a storm comin’!” We dedicated
a spread to hurricane season and included numbers and
websites so you can be prepared and safe. There’s also
information on how to stay entertained when the power goes
out.
We wrap up our series on seniors with a heartwarming
interview with two couples who have each been married more
than 60 years. Quite an accomplishment in this day and age.
Also in the series are articles on where to get help when the
finances are low, a breakdown of facilities and choosing the
right one, volunteering when you are retired, the expenses of
long-term care, and more.
Of course, we give a nod to Father’s Day and its history. Did
you know the daughter of an American Civil War Veteran was
the founder of Father’s Day? The role of the family patriarch
has changed over the years, but one thing still remains the
same: Dad’s play a big role in the family.
While we’re on the topic of National Days we celebrate, there
are many of them. Each day or month has a National Day.
For instance, World Oceans Day is on June 8. The idea is to
educate people and get them involved in keeping the oceans
clean. There are some local places hosting events in honor
of this day. Another day is National Donut Day. Ah, yes, that
round fried delight has its own day, June 2. We interviewed
some locals on what they think would be a great donut.
Summer is also time for travel. If you’re not traveling out-ofstate,
there are interesting museums to visit. First up is the
American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora in Miami. The
museum tells the story of a people through the eyes of artists
and others. If antique autos and bicycles are of interest to you,
then the Elliot Museum is a must. Sterling Elliot was an inventor
with a penchant for bicycles. The museum is in
Stuart, but worth the drive to see an electric car
from 1914.
All of us at the Parklander hope you
have a happy and safe summer.
In last month’s issue, on page
64, we incorrectly identified the
young woman in the top left photo
as Mona Tsui. Her name is Kristy
