Wine Watch by Bennet Bodenstein Tequila! Drinks made with tequila are very popular today in South Florida, and not only in Mexican restaurants. In recent years amateur mixologists have been creating their own version of the margarita and a host of other tequila based drinks in ever-increasing numbers so the choice of ingredients is of paramount importance. There is, however, a problem; all tequilas are not alike. There are many low-priced brands of tequila on the market whose only claim to fame is that they were made in Mexico. I recently had the opportunity to sample some of the better tequilas on the market and, in truth, I was very surprised at the monumental difference between a better tequila and some of the “also-rans.” To put it simply, cheap tequila makes a cheap drink. to drink tequila as the Mexicans do, one should follow the traditions of old. Put some salt on the top of your hand, then place a piece of lime nearby. Lick the salt, drink the tequila in one shot, then suck on the lime. that is the traditional Mexican method, which has, i believe, fallen into disfavor among the gringo tequila enthusiasts, but try it anyway, it’s fun. Pasote Blanco ($49). Many prefer this smooth, soft, clear unaged tequila over the slightly oaky flavor of the barrel aged tequilas. Pasote Blanco is the perfect ingredient for your favorite margarita or mixed cocktail and illustrates all the beauty and nuances of tequila when enjoyed neat or on the rocks. as with all the Pasote tequilas, it is packaged in a distinctive handmade bottle. Pasote RePosado ($59). Pasote Reposado has been aged in oak barrels for an average of six months to mellow and smooth out any rough edges. this version presents a light golden color, which cradles the aroma of herbs derived from the basic ingredient, roasted agave, complimented by a hint of coconut, and oak derived from its time spent in the barrel aging. Pasote Reposado is excellent as sipping tequila or used to make your favorite cocktail. Pasote añejo ($69). Pasote añejo is a delicate tequila that has been aged in small oak barrels for at least 12 months, producing a beverage of unequaled smoothness and character. this beverage displays the telltale tequila aroma of baked agave, which mingles with coconut and vanilla, while the flavor features the impression of oranges and cinnamon. as a side note, Pasote añejo is among the smoothest tequila that i have sampled to date. 1921 la cRema de mexico esPecial edition cReam tequila ($32.99). there is definitely tequila of a different dimension inside a very pink bottle. Whoever thought of mixing cream with tequila was a genius. this unique drink offers the flavors and aromas of vanilla, coffee, and nutmeg all wrapped in a luscious cream base. this drink is sure to be the hit of any party or to add a touch of elegance to a quiet evening at home. 1921 tequila RePosado ($49.99). 1921 tequila Reposado is also aged in oak barrels to smooth and mellow the beverage and to add its distinctive faint golden color, making it perfect as an ingredient for your favorite cocktail – especially if that cocktail is a margarita. 1921 tequila Reposado, as are all the 1921 tequilas, is supplied in a distinctive squat bottle that you cannot miss in dealer’s shelves. 1921 tequila añejo ($59.99). extra aging in wooden barrels has softened and mellowed this exceptional tequila to a point where it becomes almost ethereal. the 1921 tequila añejo has taken many awards and has been rated very high by tequila gurus both here and in Mexico, a nation where they take their tequila very, very seriously. if you are headed for Margaritaville and appreciate that hint of oak in the background, the 1921 tequila añejo is a superb choice and it is also an exceptional base for any home mixologist to use to create the super drinks of the 21st century.
