Summer is almost here. That means Summer Camp is
right around the corner. Horse camp is a terrific way
to introduce your horse-loving child to the wonderful
world of horses. As mentioned many times over, the benefits
of working around and learning about horses are endless.
That also includes implementing safety at all times. Although
they are admired for their beauty and majesty, horses should
always be respected. Even the calmest old timer can become
a hazard under the right conditions. So, safety first.
Queen Elizabeth, at age 90, still rides her favorite horses. I
was astounded she often takes a ride on her gorgeous land,
enjoying her life-long love of horses. Talk about inspiring. A
vibrant 90-year-old Queen not giving into her age restrictions.
What did surprise me when I read the story and saw the
photo of her mounted on her horse, was that she was not
wearing a helmet. I can only think she wanted to ride helmet
free at 90. That is her decision to make as an adult; not a wise
one, but who am I to judge what is in her heart as she enjoys
the liberty of still being able to do what she probably cherishes
most in her privileged world.
Willie Nelson has a video out called
“The Love of Horses.” It describes his
love for horses and trying to protect them
from slaughter for human consumption.
Nelson and his family are political activists for protecting the
horses as well as gathering up wild horses and giving them a
safe home on his ranch in Texas. He reminds us that without
the hard working horse in America’s early years, we would not
be where we are today. They helped perform all the heavy,
grueling work before heavy equipment and traveling vehicles
were the norm. Sadly, House Leadership is pushing to
reinstate legal horse slaughter in the U.S. This needs to stop
or innocent horses will end up on the foreign dinner plate as a
delicacy.
It seems that many horse enthusiasts shop around for pricing
when searching for a riding academy or boarding facility.
Although one needs to be budget conscious, inexpensive
riding fees do not guarantee safe horses, competent riding
instructors, or proper barn management. It is imperative that
you visit different barns and get a feel for safety rules and
overall horse care at the facility. A $5 savings may not be the
best value in the long run. The caveat to that is overpricing
does not guarantee you are getting the best. Horses are
serious business, so please take time to thoroughly check out
the barns in our area before making a decision. P
