THE LAST WORD
Aging is not for wimps
Mick Jagger had it right when he sang ‘What a drag it is
getting old.” Of course, getting old is better than the
alternative, but the changes the body goes through are
harrowing. At first, you don’t notice the little aches and pains when
you get out of bed in the morning. Then, you don’t stay out as late as
you used to, next you seem to retire a bit earlier. All of a sudden you
find you don’t want to drive after dark because you can’t see as well at
night (you won’t admit this though). Little by little the changes become
more pronounced. Even the Bible refers to aging as the “calamitous
days” ( Ecclesiastes, chapter 12).
Now, people say you’re only as old as you feel. Well, some days I feel
59 (my actual age, for a few more months anyway) and other days I
feel like I’m 100. Mentally, I’m still 25, but that’s another story. Thinking
and feeling are two very different things. My husband always says to
me, especially after I come up with some crazy idea of stuff I want to
do, “Honey, your mind is writing checks that your body can’t cash.”
What brought this on as a topic this month is our senior issue. There
is a tidbit about a man who is 110 years old. If you haven’t read it, go
to the Community News page. But I want to expound on his life a little.
Bernie Nenner has lived one full life. He started out on the Lower East
Side in New York, had many businesses, two marriages (both of which
ended when his wives passed away), and has children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren. Despite his age, he is still active. At 101,
Bernie did a commercial for LongLife
Steel. It’s on YouTube if you want
to see it. Now living in Parkland,
Bernie still keeps busy by helping at
the libraries he
started in Aston
Gardens.
That’s pretty
much
how I want to grow old. By that, I mean being active and having my
wits about me. I know many people who are well into their 80s and
90s that live active and full lives. Their lives are meaningful and touch
others. Our older population sometimes get the short end of the stick.
There is a wealth of knowledge and experience to gain from seniors.
So, maybe it really isn’t that much of a drag getting old. Regardless
of the physical and mental changes, life can be productive. I guess
Jimmy Durante’s song “Young at Heart” is a better way to view aging.
For you young folks, Michael Buble did a cover of the song which may
be found on YouTube.
Bernie and my older friends are definitely not wimps. Despite ailments
they are suffering with, they remain as active as they can be. May we
all be that blessed. P
