Memorial Day Ceremony May 29, 9am Join the City of Coral Springs with support of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, at a Memorial Day Ceremony in honor of the men and women in the military who have given their lives in service to our nation. The ceremony will be at Veterans Park, 8601 Royal Palm Blvd. Chief Thomas A. Matteo, retired Staff Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps, and retired Law Enforcement professional, will be the guest speakers. For more information, call 954-345-2200. ANNOUNCEMENTS DKJA Senior Awarded Scholarship Abe Waserstein will attend Princeton University this fall. Abe Waserstein, a senior at Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt High School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy in Boca Raton, has been recognized as one of the country’s most outstanding high school leaders by the Coca‐Cola Scholars Foundation and has been awarded a $20,000 college scholarship. As a member of the 29th class of Coca‐Cola Scholars, Waserstein not only exemplifies superior leadership, service, and academics – he is a change agent, positively affecting others in his/her community. Daley Appointed to Board The Florida League of Cities has appointed Coral Springs Vice Mayor Dan Daley to the Board of Directors for District 13 at an annual business meeting in Tallahasse. Parkland resident turns 110 Bernie Nenner was born on May 4,1907 in Manhattan, NY. He married the girl of his dreams, Sophie, when he was 20 and she was 18. They tied the knot on March 4, 1928. They had two children, son Ronald, 87, and Lisa, 82. Bernie has three grandsons, one granddaughter, two great‐grandsons, and three greatgranddaughters. His first business was Photo Booth machines. His next venture was provisions (smoked salmon, salami, etc.). When World War II broke out he went to work for an aircraft company. At 35, he founded a dry cleaning business called “Sir Cleaners,” which quickly became a chain. Bernie eventually sold the business. He next left New York for Florida to start a trailer park business in 1950. After 65 years of marriage, Sophie passed away. Then Bernie met Fran. They got married in Baltimore and moved to Aston Gardens in 2003. Fran passed away in 2013. Bernie’s love for books motivated him to set up two libraries in Aston Gardens and he manages both. In 2011, Bernie and Fran donated an ambulance to Israel. As one of Parkland’s oldest residents, May 16, 2007 was proclaimed Bernie Nenner’s Day by the City of Parkland. Bernie is in a television ad for Long Life Steel Company, and it can be seen on the Internet. Bernie has helped a lot of people throughout the years no matter the color or race. He is a disciplined person, watching his food intake and reading food labels. He never smoked, exercises everyday sitting in his chair, and reads the newspaper daily. Bernie’s philosphy is never give up, embrace life’s risks, not its failure. Cadet of the Year Competition Michael Cassell, a student in the Cadet Leadership Program, and an active member of the Stoneman Douglas High School Army Junior ROTC program for the past four years, is in the top 12 competing for Broward Cadet of the Year. The first through 12th place winners will be annouced at a JROTC Ceremony on May 12 with the Superintendent of Schools. As a senior this year, he is a Cadet Lieutenant Colonel and the Battalion Commander for the JROTC program, a position of great responsibility. Michael is active in extra‐curricular activities for JROTC, and other after‐school programs. He is the captain of the JROTC Varsity Drill Team and Squadron Commander of the top Coral Springs Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Squadron in Broward County. Michael leads a JROTC program that has been recognized by military and community leaders. He maintains an outstanding GPA in his Advanced Placement courses. Michael shows the personal drive and leadership qualities that direct his daily actions. He has been accepted to Norwich University in Vermont, and the Citadel in South Carolina. Michael has also been awarded a National 4‐Year Army ROTC Scholarship, The Parkland Legacy Scholarship. He is the first cadet to be awarded this new scholarship created by the Parkland Chamber of Commerce. He plans to commission as an Officer in the United States Army upon his Graduation from college.
