FROM THE EDITOR
I’m very excited to bring you May’s issue. There is quite a bit
going on this month and suffice to say there is something
for everyone. May’s the Parklander is peppered with articles
about travel to Mars, teachers at the Polar Ice Cap, snakes,
Memorial Day, gardening, and photo pages of events in the
area. That is a small taste of what’s in the pages ahead in
addition to the regular columns. A diversified read for sure.
In this issue, we begin a series on seniors and some of
the issues they face. Who knew getting old could be so
complicated? We talk about when it’s time to change from
a regular physician to a geriatric physician. A geriatrician is a
doctor who is skilled in treating the elderly who have more than
one health issue and health issues specific to the elderly.
Also, what should you consider when hiring a home care
worker? There is much more involved than you would think
and we break down the pros and cons, along with making a
choice between an agency or hiring privately.
As we age, how we are going to support ourselves is in the
forefront of our concerns. Growing old can be stressful and
we hope to answer some questions you may have. Aging can
have its perks too. Next month as we continue the series, we’ll
have articles on end of life issues, home care versus facility
care, and social services for seniors and seniors who are still
very active. Another feature will be couples who are married
50 or more years. If you know any seniors who fill the bill, send
me about 150 words on how they met, a little about their lives
together, how they stayed married that long, and a line or
two of advice on how to stay married. Include a photo of the
couple and email it to me at parklandereditor@gmail.com.
Speaking of marriage, this is the engaged couples issue.
Spotlighted are eight couples who are getting ready to tie the
knot. What a lovely momentum to add to the wedding album.
The next engagement issue is August, so once again I ask, if
you know anyone who would like their announcement in the
Parklander, let me know via email.
So engagement, marriages,
seniors ... let’s talk about
mom for a minute. I
learned something new
while putting together
this issue and that
was how Mother’s
Day got it’s start. Two
women put the wheels
in motion to set a day to
honor moms. I won’t say
more, you’ll have to read the
rest. Being a mom myself, I think
moms should be honored every day.
It’s a tough job especially if you have more than one child.
As always, I hope you enjoy May’s the Parklander. If you have
story ideas or comments, send them in or call. This magazine
is for you, the reader. Your ideas count. Have a great month. P
