Firebirds return to
Brentwood Theatre
Award-winning Firebirds return to Brentwood Theatre with
something rather different!! Praised as a “hail of frolic and
fun” by the New York Times, it would be a sin to miss it!
The Little Sisters of Hoboken desperately need to raise
funds – to bury the final four nuns currently residing in the
freezer after being poisoned by Sister Julia’s soup! So the
survivors decide to put on a fund-raising show. Expect tap
and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, misadventure and
comic surprises in this hilarious spoof.
HOLIDAY SNAP STOCK
DRAMA GROUP’S LATEST
PRODUCTION
STOCK VILLAGE HALL 25TH
TO 28TH APRIL 2018
Holiday Snap by Michael Pertwee and John Chapman
was Stock Drama Group’s latest production and was a
good traditional British farce.
The play was set in a luxury time share villa in Portugal
which had been double booked for a dirty week, without
the knowledge of the company’s representative the short
sighted Commander "Chitto" Chittenden who, in the
opening few moments of the play, manages to break his
glasses and pull down the curtain rail of one of the
windows of the villa. Chittenden who is very partial to
drink first mistakes the two couples Leslie and Eve and
Henry and Mary for each other and then, as the play goes
on, and the amount of alcohol he consumes increases,
assumes that they are one and the same. Added to the
confusion is that the two couples assume that the other
couple are the servants. It seems that Henry may have
the upper hand when he discovers that Leslie and Eve are
not married, but it is when his mother in law Celia arrives
that we discover that Mary is not his wife. Henry then has
to bribe Leslie and Eve to impersonate his alibi and
pretend to be Sir Piers and Lady Amanda Marchbanks
and Mary to be the servant Maria, to her annoyance. At
this point things go from bad to worse when the real Sir
Piers “Perky” Marchbanks arrives followed by Henry’s wife
Kit. And that’s only a brief summary. Add in Eve
pretending to her husband, who telephones, to be in a
Portuguese convent with one of her old teachers and
Leslie pretending to be in Wales to his boss who is Eve’s
husband, the food hamper containing bottles of alcohol
disguised as toilet disinfectant and Mary at one point
having to pretend to be Hungarian and you had an
evening of great hilarity.
The play was brilliantly acted and, because of the
audience’s laughter it was sometimes impossible to hear
what was being said on stage. All the members of the cast
gave outstanding performances. The standard of acting
as always from Stock Drama Group was up to London
standards but with tickets at more reasonable prices! I
feel sorry for anyone who was aware of it but missed
seeing it.
In the play Commander "Chitto" Chittenden was played
by Colin Smith, Leslie by Ian Stratford, Eve by Shirlee
Grundy, Henry by Peter Baker, Mary by Dawn Popplewell,
Celia by Victoria Rossiter, Perky by Adam Popplewell and
Kit by Sarah Bleakley. The play was directed Corinne
Woodgate.
Stock Drama Group’s next production will be from 21st to
24th November. If you have booked a timeshare in
Portugal – or anywhere else make sure first that it has not
been double booked.
BLACKWATER
COUNTRY SHOW
Venue: Rook Hall, Chigborough Road,
Heybridge, Maldon, Essex, CM9 4RB
The show warmly welcomes thousands of
visitors from miles around. The huge range of
attractions at the 2018 show includes the
chance to watch a team of uniformed riders on
magnificent Heavy Horses synchronised to music, the
paddlesport team will showcase the speed and agility of
lightweight canoes across the lake, meet the Vikings in their
living village and handle birds of prey.
Garry Hills, one of the show organisers, says “There will be a
chance to watch a superb, lively display by the Essex Police in
the Main Ring capturing a fugitive with an informative and
entertaining commentary. By the lake visitors can relax to
victorian music or acoustic guitar melodies with a refreshing
drink while watching the show.”
Michelle Watkinson, show organiser, described “In our 13th year
there is lots of fun and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy
in the surroundings of the countryside. The Ferris Wheel has
returned by popular demand this year giving you the opportunity
to see the show from the sky!”
Skilled craftsmen and local
producers come together at
this popular event in the heart
of the countryside to display
and sell their creations. There
are marquees and exhibits of
painters, potters, walking stick
makers and blacksmiths,
bakers, and brewers. There is
flora and fauna, home and
garden country gifts,
handmade jewellery and
nautical wares too.
Foodies will be delighted to
see a range of fresh local
produce, juices, award
winning cheeses and pies, pickles, chutneys, cupcakes,
homemade fudge, and a great variety of hot food to enjoy. There
really is something for everyone.
For those who enjoy nostalgia, a
variety of colourful vintage tractors
will be driven and looking forward
to the latest developments, some
modern machinery is on display.
Together, these fascinating
displays show how farming has
moved through the ages.
There are so many opportunities
for children too. Why not take
them into a canoe for the first
time? There are experienced staff
and instructors on hand to help
them navigate the beautiful lake.
And if Crufts inspires you, your
furriest members of the family are
also invited to join the fun! You can enter your four-legged friend
to race against time in Flyball; a thrilling agility relay game. Or
why not enter them into the agility course, or dog show for the
chance of winning a rosette.
Around the showground little ones can meet animals that are
sleek, prickly, furry, shorn and curly! Enjoy activities in the
children’s area with lots of space to have fun and laughter with
the family. Adventurous youngsters can have-a-go at clay
shooting or try using bow and arrow with professional Archers.
This is a local, big show in its 13th year with a friendly, bustling
atmosphere surrounded by soft hedgerows and natures wildlife.
In support of the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.
What a great way to spend a day in the country!
Advanced tickets can be bought from Maldon TIC (01621)
The Arts Society, Brentwood District
(formerly Brentwood & District Decorative and Fine Arts Society)
Bertie Pearce delighted us again last month when
he talked to us about Charles Dickens - the man and
his life through his characters. And he not only talked
about the characters. Bertie became them, when he
read from Dickens’ works. After entertaining us so
well last year with his talk on Punch and Judy, he
has become one of our most popular speakers.
The main thread running through Bertie’s talk – and
what made it so interesting – was the link between
Dickens’ own life story and the characters who
illuminated his stories. The outcome was that we
were able to enjoy two talks, one about Dickens’ life
and the other about how he created the tales that so
gripped his readers.
Dickens had a mixed childhood. His father, John
Dickens, was not good with money. His parents
moved home regularly, partly because of John
Dickens’ work but also because they sometimes
needed to move to a cheaper place. Some of the
moves worked out well. In particular, Dickens loved
his time in Kent, when his father was working at
Chatham dockyard. Rochester was a particular
favourite, where he visited the theatre regularly.
Finally, John Dickens’ failings with money caught up
with him and he finished up in the Marshalsea
debtors’ prison. This was a catastrophe for Dickens
who at age twelve was sent to earn a living at a
blacking factory by the Thames and to live with a
terrible landlady. Life for the young Dickens became
harsh and hungry. Things improved when the death
of John Dickens’ grandmother left him a legacy with
which to pay off his debts and be released him from
the Marshalsea. His mother thought Dickens should
continue at the blacking factory but luckily for Dickens
his father did not. This episode ruined Dickens’
relationship with his mother and shaped his later difficult
relationships with women. Dickens went back to school
for a year but then left at age fifteen to work in an office.
An adept mimic, he was popular there. Next door, there
was a gin drinking laundress.
Let us pause there to see what lessons for his writing
that Dickens was able to draw from his life so far. Quite
a lot. First, the settings for his books. Kent featured in
much of his writing – remember the Kent marshes in
David Copperfield. Dingley Dell in The Pickwick Papers
made the Kent connection again. And Rochester
featured in his first and last books. London was an even
more important setting for his books. Dickens explored
London incessantly, during the day and at night. What
he found there became key settings for his stories.
Next, characters. His father
became the model for Mr
Micawber. His mother, whose
family was very musical,
became Mrs Nickelby. His
dreadful landlady became
Mrs Pipchin in Dombey &
Son, while the laundress next
door to his office became Mrs
Gamp in Martin Chuzzlewhit.
And that was just the start.
When he fell in love with
`Maria Beadnell, she became
the model for Dora Spendlow
in David Copperfield, Dickens’
favourite and most
autobiographical book. It was
a pattern which recurred. The
real-life people the very
observant Dickens met became the remarkable
characters in his stories. Characters with memorable
names he took great pains to create, as his notebooks
showed. There were many versions in the notebook of
the name Martin Chuzzlewhit before the final one was
chosen.
Dickens began writing quite early. His first full work
published was Sketches by Boz. But his breakthrough
came with the Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club,
now better known as just The Pickwick Papers. With it,
he broke new ground with his story-telling in
instalments, which became immensely popular and
widely copied. The Pickwick Papers made his name, not
just nationally but internationally. It attracted readers
from the start but then became a real box office hit when
Sam Weller made his appearance in the stories. After
that, with each new work, Dickens’
popularity increased until he
became a national icon.
Dickens’ appeal lay not just in the
novelty of instalments, important
though that was - the cliffhanger
endings of each instalment
captured the national imagination.
His appeal lay just as much in his
rumbustious characters; his keen
observation of daily life; his use of
gifted illustrators like Cruikshank,
illustrators whose drawings
became gold dust for later film and
stage directors seeking inspiration
about how Dickens visualised his
characters; and a real social
conscience created by his early
tough and hungry years.
Dickens’ work had a practical social impact too. It
became an engine for social reform. His focus on
child neglect and poverty jogged the national
conscience. The depiction of Dotheboys Hall in
Nicholas Nickelby led to the closure of many
Yorkshire boarding schools like Dotheboys Hall. In
another, rather different example of his influence on
the nation, many thought A Christmas Carol
restored life to the Victorian Christmas. Blended
together, Dickens’ life, his observations of life and
his writings became a major force in 19 th century
Britain.
Our next talk is on Wednesday 20 June 2018,
when Val Woodgate will talk to us on Looking at
Portraits - A very English Taste. Val is a lecturer
and guide at the Tate Britain and Tate Modern,
as well as many other London Galleries. She is
a former member of the teaching team at
Dulwich Picture Gallery.
Val’s talk will be about portraiture
in England. For about 200 years after the
Reformation, portraiture was virtually the only
subject in art. During this time the majority of
major painters working here were foreigners;
the most important of these were Holbein and
Van Dyck. From the 18th century on,
outstanding British portrait painters such as
Reynolds and Gainsborough came to
prominence. The portrait has continued to
intrigue and fascinate right up to the present
day, as artists such as Lucian Freud explore and
expand the subject.
Our talks are at the Community
Hall, Ingatestone at 7.30 for
8pm, usually on the 3rd
Wednesday of each month.
Visitors are always welcome.
The Probus Club of Ingatestone
Our May lunch was a rather more sombre affair than usual. Over
a few days in April we lost three of our members – John Race, John
Lyons and John Harburn. We mourned their going whilst
celebrating their achievements in life and their contributions to our
Club.
After lunch, President Peter Batchelor talked to us about The
History and Technology of Submarine Cables. Most of us had a
pretty vague idea of how submarine cables developed and what
their present role is. So, we found it very interesting and
worthwhile. And we now appreciate much better that these cables
continue to play a key role in the modern world.
Modern signalling technology dates back to the 1790s, when the
French championed the development of semaphore. Then in 1838
Cooke & Wheatstone introduced the first commercial telegraph for
railway signalling in the GWR, followed by other rail companies.
This was a harbinger for the future. New ideas for better
communication would be commercially driven, frequently by the
UK.
insulation, and was capable of 8 words a minute at £1 a word. It
soon paid for itself. Other countries got into the act – the next
cable was from France to Canada in 1869. The cable was
British, though. Indeed, Britain ruled under the waves – at the
end of the 19 th century, the UK owned 80% of the cable ships
and 60% of the cables.
Into the 20 th century, Marconi and the invention of radio –
wireless telegraphy - changed everything. But radio telephones
had limited capacity. Valve amplifiers were invented to boost the
signal in telecom cables on land by the 1030s but it took a long
time before they were reliable enough for undersea cables.
However, by the 1940s, valve amplifiers were reliable and
undersea cables began to form a global network. It all worked
flawlessly. Apart from when a Russian trawler cut a cable,
apparently not by chance, causing an inyernational incident. By
the 1970s, transistors were being used for the amplifiers. By the
1980s, fibre optic cables were in operation. Fibre optics had
been invented in 1966. In Harlow, Essex, too; just like radio from
Marconi in Chelmsford. And by the 1980s, cable ships had
ploughs to bury cables – and protect them from fishermen.
Today, there is a dense global network of cables with immense
capacity. It is less vulnerable than you might think – cut one
cable and another route would take over. These cables remain
vital to the modern world of communications. Satellites play an
Another key development was the introduction to the UK of gutta
percha, derived from the gum of a tree in Malaya. This was a
natural thermoplastic and made undersea cables possible. The first
cables were simple – copper strands coated with gutta percha. The
Goliath paddle steamer laid the first undersea cable, made by the
Submarine Telegraph Co., under the English Channel in 1850. 25
miles long, it was cut by French fishermen after three days. But
more cables were laid to the Continent and Ireland, while ambitious
plans were made for a transatlantic cable of 2,200 miles from
Newfoundland to Ireland. After some failures, it was laid by HMS
Agamemnon and USS Niagara, meeting in mid Atlantic. They were
not cable ships – specialist cable ships did not come for another 20
years. The first messages were passed between Queen Victoria
and President Buchanan. But the cable only worked for a month
and could only produce a few words per hour– the voltage was too
great and the copper insulation not good enough.
However, that first transatlantic cable showed what was possible
and how great the rewards could be. The UK government worked
with companies to develop materials, manufacturing and signal
transmission. The American civil war delayed the next cable. But a
much more robust cable was laid in 1866, with much better
12
important role. But they are not “the
cloud”. The real work of undersea cables today is not so much
to carry phone calls as to transmit the internet and data. The
cloud is not overhead, it is under the sea.
Our visit to the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in late April
was much enjoyed. Our hosts made sure that everything ran
smoothly, paced the visit very well and left us feeling we had
been very well looked after. Our guides made it clear that visits
like ours were very welcome. Sandhurst is keen that its role in
British life should be well understood. Any profits from visits are
welcome too, as they go to trust funds that, amongst other
things, provide personal help when needed to cadets in training
and to staff. We were also fortunate with the weather and the
travelling. There were no hold-ups either at the Dartford
Crossing or the M25. It’s not often you can say that.
Sandhurst was not the first officer training establishment. The
Royal Military Academy (as it became in 1764) began at
Woolwich in 1741. But it only provided specialist training for the
Royal Artillery at the start, later taking on officer cadets for the
Royal Corps of Engineers (1761) and Signals (1920). There was
e Journal

no equivalent
training for officer
cadets in the
infantry or
cavalry. And it
showed. In
Flanders, in the
early years of the
22-year long
struggle with
France, a British
officer from
G u e r n s e y ,
Colonel John Le
M a r c h a n t ,
recognised that
the enthusiasm
of amateurs who
had bought a
commission was
no substitute for
training in
leadership and
military skills. He
convinced the
head of the army, the Duke of York, that the army should set up
an officer training school. Temporary schools were first in High
Wycombe for seniors and then in Marlow for juniors. There was
resistance to the cost of building a permanent
school but Parliament eventually voted £30,000
for it in 1801. George III signed a royal warrant in
1802 for a Royal Military College. There would be
100 orphan cadets, 80 serving officers and 100
gentlemen cadets. Le Marchant wanted a base
in the country, away from “injurious influences”;
the King wanted it near Windsor; the army
wanted it near London; while the enemy France
was just across the Channel. The outcome was
the purchase of the Sandhurst Park Estate in
1802 for £8460, £9 million in today’s money. The
buildings were completed in 1812 and the
College was officially opened by Queen Charlotte
in 1813, who presented its Colours. 120 years
later, it was proposed to combine Woolwich and
Sandhurst. World War II delayed this but the two
were finally combined in 1947 to become the
Royal Military Academy of today. The Academy
is the home of the British Army’s officer corps and
all officers pass through it.
Sandhurst is an impressive place. But there was
some dodgy dealing when the Government
bought it. It was sold by William Pitt the Younger, who had
purchased it from poor relatives for only £2,600. In other words,
he almost tripled his money. It is not clear whether Pitt was Prime
Minister at the precise time of the transaction (he left office on 14
March 1801 and did not return to office until 10 March 1804) but
it doesn’t look good. Still, for the nation it’s turned out to be a
good investment. Sandhurst has an array of striking buildings.
The Old College, completed in 1812 and designed by William
Wyatt, is the best known. But others are handsome too. New
College for one, built shortly before World War I. The Royal
Memorial Chapel. The Roman Catholic Chapel. And, though not
to everyone’s taste, the brutalist Churchill Hall, Victory Building
and Academy HQ.
In many ways, Sandhurst symbolises the army. And acts as its
collective memory, as with the Indian Army Memorial Room. But
e Journal
its principal purpose is, as it always has been, a place where men
- and now women too – learn leadership skills and military skills.
Training at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst lasts for 44 weeks,
broken down into three 14-week terms. Between each term, there
are adventurous training exercises and 2-3 weeks of leave. Term
one focuses on basic military skills, fitness and decision making.
Term two continues the development of leadership skills and has a
major academic component. Officer cadets select their future corps
or regiment at this stage. In term three, officer cadets put their new
skills into practice on complex and demanding training exercises in
the UK and overseas. Once training has been completed, the new
officers receive their commission in the British Army and join their
chosen units after a brief period of leave.
Sandhurst is famous for its traditions. Like the Sovereign’s Parade,
at which officer cadets receive their commissions at the completion
of their training, At the conclusion of the parade the graduating
cadets march in slow time up the steps of the Old College and into
the building. Since 1926 they have traditionally been followed by
the Academy Adjutant - still mounted on his charger. No mean feat,
when the Adjutant is usually from an infantry regiment and has to
learn to ride in a very short period. Called the Sovereign’s Parade
by direction of King George VI, after he took the salute at the 1946
Parade and was enormously impressed by it. Nonetheless, our
guides – one-time Sandhurst cadets themselves, now retired –
stressed that Sandhurst does not stand still. In their day, twice as
many cadets came from independent as from state schools. Now,
the proportions are reversed.
Probus Clubs worldwide work to provide regular gatherings
for those retired or semi-retired business and professional
people who, in retirement, appreciate and value opportunities
to meet others in similar circumstances with similar interests
and who enjoy the company of those having a broadly
comparable outlook on life.
Lunch meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of each
month at the Mount Avenue Banqueting Suite, Hutton, 12.30
pm for 1pm. Often they are followed by a short (ten to fifteenminutes)
talk. New members are always warmly welcomed.
Written by Steve Dodge Dip PFS
from the
Independent Financial Advice Centre
The two constant things in life are death and taxes,
(Benjamin Franklin) but I would like to add change.
Very little ever seems to stay the way it was.
I went to Whitby in Yorkshire recently to try and find a
pub where as a boy I watched men playing
“horseshoes”. After two days of fruitless searching and
visiting every pub in the locality, (I was not driving!) I
gave up, there was no sign of anything resembling my
childhood memories.
People change, jobs, careers, Wives, Husbands and
homes can change; the list of things that change is
virtually endless. Keeping track of it all is sometimes
not easy.
Many of us change Job, accumulating bits of pension
along the way. This situation will increase with “Auto-
Enrolment” where membership of a pension scheme is
compulsory unless you deliberately opt out.
With rule changes allowing pension funds to be passed
to spouses and down the generations, it is rather
important that in the event of your demise your pension
fund goes exactly where and to whom you want.
It is customary when joining a pension scheme to
nominate someone to benefit from your funds in the
event of your death. Quite often in one’s early working
years this could be your parents or siblings.
Change job, join a new scheme, get married and you
might want your partner to benefit. Separate and you
might want your children to be the beneficiaries. Remarry
and you might want your new spouse to be in the
frame, and so on, constant change.
To ensure your funds go to the right beneficiary you need
to complete an “expression of wishes” or “nomination of
beneficiary” form for every pension scheme you have.
The problem is unless you keep these up to date and
change them when your circumstances change, your
funds could end up in the “wrong” hands. How would
your new Spouse feel if you died and your pension fund
went to your ex because of an out of date nomination
form?
The pension fund trustees must decide who will get any
benefits in the event of someone’s death and legal
disputes between potential inheritors are becoming ever
more common place.
With so many changes in pension rules, tax treatment,
investments and list of potential beneficiaries there has
perhaps never been a better time to review your pension
schemes.
A review could ensure your funds are right for you and
the right people would benefit in the event of your
demise.
Your IFA can help with these changes!
Is It Time To Sell Your Unwanted Vehicle?
Why Not Try www.SecureCarBuyer.com
On our travels recently, we came across these two toy cars in a local
business industrial estate car park. We can only presume this is
someone’s idea of a joke, or indeed someone making a bit of a point;
since these little cars were taking up one whole parking space, in
what seemed to be an otherwise extremely busy car park. One of
our transport team couldn’t resist the temptation to stop by and take
a picture of them together with one of our vans. This picture really
got me thinking…. we really will buy any car! In recent local
It’s time for
purchases we have bought cars ranging from the very old and undriveable,
to the nearly new and still financed. We meet people with
lots of different reasons for wanting a quick sale, those that have
been given a company car to those that aren’t allowed to drive any
more for medical reasons. Some of our customers simply don’t use
their vehicle any more in favour of public transport and we have
even met people who do not have the space for their car in a
congested communal car park or street where they live; selling their
unwanted vehicle simply alleviates their parking problems.
We are out everyday in the local vicinity collecting unwanted
vehicles and meeting some extremely lovely local people along the
way, which is the reason why we like to work on our doorstep. Our
business is open 7 days a week from 7am-9pm and we work during
the evenings and weekend (and including Bank Holidays) as we
know these are the only times some of our customers are free
around their hectic working schedules. We really do work especially
hard to work around our customer’s needs and be available to
collect your car when it is suitable for you. As we work in the local
area we can also boast about quick collection times with some
customers experiencing collection of their car in under one hour door
to door, which includes them being paid instantly via bank transfer
If you’re the parent of teenage offspring, particularly if your progeny is
currently lounging around the house having broken up from school,
college or university and you’re grieving the loss of old fashioned
apprenticeships, then you’ll be accustomed to glares, back-chat, moodswings,
bouts of selfishness and sulks followed by demands for money.
You may be thinking, ‘What happened to my polite, good humoured
little darling who was happy to help wash the car for pocket money?’
Take heart, you’re not alone as many parents of teenagers will tell you
and it will pass. But why does this happen to our charming sons and
daughters who seem to loose the
ability for empathy overnight in
exchange for acne and a
permanent scowl?
Teenage Brain
The Teenage Brain
behaviour and makes decisions, gradually gains influence – but this
part doesn’t fully mature until your child’s mid-twenties and perhaps
beyond.
Any parent who has tried to rouse their teenager before noon on a
Sunday will tell you that teenage sleep patterns also differ from
adults. Studies show that adolescents need as much sleep as
younger children (about 8 hours), that daytime sleepiness increases
and the patterns of sleep shift towards later waking and sleeping
times. Because of school times, teenagers try to catch up on sleep
Well, the teenage brain is very
much a work in progress. Massive
structural changes happen to the
brain prior to and during puberty
and this neural upheaval may be
at the heart of your teenager’s
personality change.
First up, the teenage brain reacts
very differently to stress and
anxiety than adult brains do,
according to the research of
physiologist Sheryl Smith. Whilst
adult brains release chemicals to
calm down stress reactions,
teenage brains amplify the chemical reaction to stress and the resulting
emotional behaviour, such as anger or tears, will be more pronounced.
So whilst to you it may seem that your teenager is over reacting, this
may be the only response available to him or her.
Whilst in the womb and for a short time after birth, a baby’s brain will
grow rapidly and make an astonishing number of neural connections (to
enable electro chemical messages to fire across different regions of
the brain and down through the spinal cord). At this stage the brain has
many more connections than it requires and as the baby develops and
learns, some of these connections are pruned down. Now MRI scans
of children taken over a series of years have shown that humans
experience a second spurt of brain growth just prior to puberty.
This shake-up of the neural network coincides with the mood-swings
and personality changes that we experience in our teenage sons and
daughters. Can you blame them? They have to rewire their brains at the
same time as coping with a growing interest in sexual matters and
sitting important exams!
Because this brain development and rewiring happens unevenly across
the brain, different areas responsible for things such as emotions,
language skills, reasoning etcetera mature at different times. A teenager
is not a small adult: they are a very different creature altogether. For
example, don’t assume that because you’ve laid out an argument that
your teenager is interpreting it in the same way that you’ve presented
it. The seat of reasoning – the frontal cortex – is continuing to develop,
and if he or she doesn’t have the neural structure in place, you cannot
expect your adolescent to really think things through at the same level
S P E C I A L
as an adult.
What about Othe Fteenage F E obsession R with what others think about them?
Isabelle Rosso, Consultation who & has Report worked of on the MRI studies, also found that as
your Findings
adolescents’ abstract reasoning skills increased, so did their levels of
social anxiety. only Part £ of abstract *
reasoning includes being able judge
what others
*Please
thinking
and feeling but this may contribute to increased
feelings of Expires worry about 201. how others view oneself.
Teenagers are frequently chastised for needless risk taking and
believing they are invincible (the high rate of accidents involving
teenage drivers sadly supports this). According to Professor Laurence
Steinberg, heightened risk taking in adolescence is the result of
competition between two very different brain systems: the ‘socioemotional’
and ‘cognitive-control’ networks.
During adolescence, the socio-emotional system becomes more
assertive, allowing your teenager to become more easily aroused and
experience more intense emotion. They also become more sensitive
to social influence. Later on the cognitive-control system, that regulates
by having lie ins at weekends but these irregular sleep patterns can
decrease the quality of sleep leading to irritability.
As much as teenagers are a mystery to us, let’s not forget that as
adults we are equally as perplexing to them. I’ll leave you with an
observation from Mark Twain:
“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could
hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be
twenty- one, I was astonished by how much he’d learned in seven
years.”
BLACKWATER
COUNTRY SHOW
Venue: Rook Hall, Chigborough Road,
Heybridge, Maldon, Essex, CM9 4RB
The show warmly welcomes thousands of
visitors from miles around. The huge range of
attractions at the 2018 show includes the
chance to watch a team of uniformed riders on
magnificent Heavy Horses synchronised to music, the
paddlesport team will showcase the speed and agility of
lightweight canoes across the lake, meet the Vikings in their
living village and handle birds of prey.
Garry Hills, one of the show organisers, says “There will be a
chance to watch a superb, lively display by the Essex Police in
the Main Ring capturing a fugitive with an informative and
entertaining commentary. By the lake visitors can relax to
victorian music or acoustic guitar melodies with a refreshing
drink while watching the show.”
Michelle Watkinson, show organiser, described “In our 13th year
there is lots of fun and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy
in the surroundings of the countryside. The Ferris Wheel has
returned by popular demand this year giving you the opportunity
to see the show from the sky!”
Skilled craftsmen and local
producers come together at
this popular event in the heart
of the countryside to display
and sell their creations. There
are marquees and exhibits of
painters, potters, walking stick
makers and blacksmiths,
bakers, and brewers. There is
flora and fauna, home and
garden country gifts,
handmade jewellery and
nautical wares too.
Foodies will be delighted to
see a range of fresh local
produce, juices, award
winning cheeses and pies, pickles, chutneys, cupcakes,
homemade fudge, and a great variety of hot food to enjoy. There
really is something for everyone.
For those who enjoy nostalgia, a
variety of colourful vintage tractors
will be driven and looking forward
to the latest developments, some
modern machinery is on display.
Together, these fascinating
displays show how farming has
moved through the ages.
There are so many opportunities
for children too. Why not take
them into a canoe for the first
time? There are experienced staff
and instructors on hand to help
them navigate the beautiful lake.
And if Crufts inspires you, your
furriest members of the family are
also invited to join the fun! You can enter your four-legged friend
to race against time in Flyball; a thrilling agility relay game. Or
why not enter them into the agility course, or dog show for the
chance of winning a rosette.
Around the showground little ones can meet animals that are
sleek, prickly, furry, shorn and curly! Enjoy activities in the
children’s area with lots of space to have fun and laughter with
the family. Adventurous youngsters can have-a-go at clay
shooting or try using bow and arrow with professional Archers.
This is a local, big show in its 13th year with a friendly, bustling
atmosphere surrounded by soft hedgerows and natures wildlife.
In support of the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.
What a great way to spend a day in the country!
Advanced tickets can be bought from Maldon TIC (01621)
856503 and Burnham-on-Crouch TIC (01621) 784785 at
discounted prices and will cost a little more on the day. Visit
www.blackwatercountryshow.co.uk for more details.
MURDER MYSTERY AT THE MANOR
Another amazing night was hosted by Bicknacre Friendship
Club at Brewers Arms Pub.
The second murder mystery night was held as a direct result
of requests received from the first fun night, Murder at
Catsby Hall.
The stage was set, room dressed in Victorian props,
atmosphere electric and some players even dressed in
character....... The room was buzzing.....
Laughter didn’t stop and everyone enjoyed the banter and
characterisation of the evening.
“ What a fantastic night” quote Marion Donaghy
Our clever ‘Grand Sleuth’ was proud to win and pleased with
the fabulous array of items which was included in her prize.
All to enable the winner to enjoy another murder mystery
night in.
In addition this time,
the Club included a
superb raffle which
was enthusiastically
supported and
enjoyed.
Congratulations and
thanks must go to
Angelina Robinson for
organising such a brilliant evening and to Jason Merritt, for
generously giving up his time to be such a fun Master of
Ceremony. They both did a great job.
We must however apologise to those people who wanted to
join in on the night but did not have tickets. The evening was
organised, in advance, to accommodate a set number of
people.
To ensure nobody misses out next time, we recommend you
ringing Angelina on 07525196952 to register your interest
and details. We can then let you know the next date, at the
appropriate time.
cut) and nonstunned slaughter.
An overwhelming majority of British vets believe consumers
need to be better informed about slaughter methods and
welfare at slaughter. Many members of the public are not
informed that these meat products are being sold in
supermarkets, given in hospitals and schools without the
correct labelling. Denmark, Switzerland, New Zealand and
Belgium (Wallooon region) have all banned non-stun slaughter
on animal welfare grounds.
There are two non-stunned forms of slaughter according to
religious rites in the UK – Shechita in Judaism and Halal in
Islam. The Muslim faith requires the animals to be ‘alive and
healthy’ at the time of slaughter. There are no domestic or EU
regulations that require halal or kosher meat to be clearly
CLEARER MEAT LABELLING
e
You may think this is an odd heading for a veterinary article –
we should be here for preserving life rather than talking about
meat labelling. All animals’ welfare is our priority; this is the
reason why this month’s article focusses on welfare at t
slaughter. Very few vets think the public understands the
difference between stunned slaughter (where the animal is
stunned to render it insensible to pain before having its throat
immediate edge of not post-cut less than stunning 12cm must offers sever a valid the means neck of of reducing the animal
just below the glottis, cutting the trachea, oesophagus, both
carotid arteries and jugular veins. A ‘sawing’ action is
permitted provided the blade is not lifted from the animal’s
neck. Approximately 85 Per cent of halal meat is currently
where stunned. an immediate A Halal Food post-cut Foundation stun is applied, survey we of believe 66 Islamic that
scholars found 95 per cent agreed it permissible for halal
slaughter to include pre-stunning, so long as the stun did not
cause death, physical injury or hinder bleed-out, and
slaughter was carried out by a Muslim. However, many
scholars still do not recommend stunning saying it affects
blood loss during exsanguination and the quality of the meat
produced.
The British Veterinary Association calls for an end to all nonstun
slaughter in the UK. Although EU and UK law requires all
animals to be pre-stunned, non-stun slaughter is permitted
for some communities. Vet’s concerns do not relate to
religious belief but to the animal welfare compromise of nonstun
slaughter.
Vets’ own preferences as consumers are clear: 9 out of 10
would NOT buy meat from non-stunned animals but almost
all (97%) WOULD buy meat and fish labelled as “pre-stunned
at slaughter”.
The British Veterinary Association’s position on non-stun
slaughter:
We believe that all animals should be stunned before
slaughter.
If slaughter without stunning is still to be permitted:
• any meat or fish from this source must be clearly labelled to
enable consumers to fully understand the choice they are
making when purchasing such products
• immediate post-cut stunning offers a valid means of
reducing the suffering of animals at slaughter - although
the option of post-cut stunning is not equivalent to pre-cut
stunning it presents a highly desirable refinement
• where an immediate post-cut stun is applied, we believe
that the requirement for sheep/goats to remain stationary
for a minimum period of 20 seconds is unnecessary as
stunning renders the animal immediately unconscious and
insensible to pain
• the supply of non-stun products should be matched with
demand
This scheme would help customers choose meat based around
animal welfare and Islamic guidelines. These will allow
Muslim consumers to buy assured products that fit with their
own beliefs regarding halal slaughter.
The NFU’s Red Tractor food assurance scheme requires all
animals to be stunned before slaughter, as do the RSPCA’s
Freedom Food and Soil Association Organic schemes.
The most scientifically and politically sound measures would
be: ban all non-stun slaughter and label all meat produced
using stunned halal slaughter methods.
Petitioning our local MP may add weight to our ability to
have all animals stunned pre-slaughter?
LITTLE BADDOW PARISH COUNCIL
was agreed.
At the meeting on 3rd May the Chair Nic Cooper and Vice Chair
Peter Irvine were re-elected. The Chair said that the village owed a
debt of gratitude to the two retiring Councillors. John Robinson had
served for over 30years and Mary Buckley for over 15 years. He
thanked both very much indeed. There were potentially three
prospective candidates for the two vacancies.
The Council elected a new committee for the Almshouses on a
staggered basis of three and four years in office and the Chair
thanked all five former Trustees for their long and dedicated service.
The Council also reallocated all its own responsibilities which will
cover its two vacancies. One new responsibility was added
connected with establishing an action plan for an improved hall car
park. The Councillor responsible for the new residents’ welcome
pack said these were out of date. It was agreed to substitute a
plastic wallet with the latest parish newsletter, the footpath map and
a welcome letter explaining about the village and council websites.
The Parish Assembly had been a satisfactory event although there
was a need to improve the microphone situation as questions and
answers were missed. The fact that there are only four of the
promised eight phone lines into the Danbury Health Centre
continues to exacerbate communication.
In public question time there was continuing concern raised over
the hazardous parking situation at Paper Mill Lock as the car park
is currently weather dependent. It was noted that the
Neighbourhood Plan process has also highlighted this as a
particular village concern. Highways would be contacted to see if
there could be help for a grid on the farmer’s carpark.
It was hoped that the police would soon provide the body cameras
needed to start the Speedwatch again. Speeding is still a major
village concern.
As the bike riding in Heather Hills is continuing despite clear notices,
it was agreed to enquire about Chelmsford City Council
enforcement officers.
Meanwhile many of the footpaths are slippy and hazardous and
some require action including nos. 76 which has vanished! A plan
1st Danbury Scout Hut nearing completion
The 1st Danbury Scout Hut is almost finished! By the time
The Journal goes to print we hope to be almost there; with
just some fitting out, flooring and the landscaping to finish
off. Since the hut was structurally condemned in December
2016, all scout groups (beavers, cubs and scouts) have
been meeting in different locations every week. We plan a
formal opening for the HQ in September to allow us time to
paint and move our equipment back over the summer
months.
The new HQ has a large main hall, with roof lights and doors
opening onto the side garden, which has been raised to
create our new fire pit areas. The large Quartermaster Store
at the front
of the
building will
house the
majority of
o u r
equipment;
accessed
from the
front so
(Note, entry forms need to be submied
packing for
b
weekends
away and
camps etc.
will be far
simpler! We have a breakout room which will be used for
small groups, meetings and leaders sleeping
It costs just £3 to join
accommodation. The kitchen has been designed to be
t
practical for each of our groups to use. The new entrance
hall has plenty of room for waiting parents, activities and
noticeboards.
I
We have made the decision to install an Air Source Heat
Pump for the new heating source; the pump acts like a
fridge in reverse, extracting heat from outside air, absorbing
it into a fluid which is then passed through a compressor
which increases the temperature and the heat is transferred
to the underfloor heating pipes. We’re really pleased that
we have made this choice to move away from fossil fuels
and create a greener footprint.
So with an underfloor heating system and a highly
insulated building, the new HQ will truly be a warm and
welcoming venue for the group to meet for many more
generations of young people.
We are extremely grateful to those who have contributed
to the fundraising effort so far – we do still have a bit more
to raise to get things finished but we are nearly there.
Lastly, we’re looking for some of the “old” Danbury scouts
– were you a scout who attended 1st Danbury? we’d love
to hear from you. You can contact us on
Top Tips for Keeping a Lid on It
who want to make changes in their lives, anxiety can
cause problems for some people, here are her top tips:
• Slow down! Anxiety can be linked to trying to do too
much, learn to say ‘no’ occasionally.
• Curly Martin, A highly regarded life coach, reminds her
clients to ‘remember the airline rule,’ put your own oxygen
mask on first before you help others, we must take care of
ourselves in order to help others.
• Surround yourself with positive, supportive people, limit
your time around ‘energy drainers’ and ‘me people.’
• Exercise regularly, your body will naturally release
endorphins which are your minds ‘feel good chemicals.’
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine drinks and too much over
processed food, eat 3 healthy meals a day.
• When you feel that have too many things to do, try doing
things for just 5 minutes each, so ironing just 5 minutes,
not the entire basket.
• Accept you can’t do everything, do what you can and
DANBURY MEETING POINT
For our April meeting we had an amusing and
informative talk by Rev. Keith Lovell entitled
History through famous people of Essex. Keith is
a regular presenter and we always enjoy his visits
to our group. Then in May we welcomed Dr Jane
Pearson to give a talk on Marks Hall, the decline
and fall of an Essex Jacobean Mansion. This was
another excellent and well-presented historical
talk illustrated with slides. Jane was thanked by
our chairman David Whiteing. Our annual
summer outing this year will be to Marks Hall in
August. Our next meeting on Wednesday 13th
June will be a talk on the Chelmsford Food Bank,
Jazz on a summer evening
What could be more wonderful than to spend an evening in
the sunshine, picnic, pleasant environment, and some Trad
Jazz?
30 years ago, the Rotary Club of Wickford ran its inaugural
“Jazz on a Summer Evening “ in the not insubstantial garden
of one of its members, to raise some much needed funds
for the then very young St Luke’s Hospice in Basildon,
which had been a project supported by the Club since its
inception. St Luke’s Hospice supports people with life
limiting illnesses and their families through those times
during which we all would find hard to cope.
That first evening was so successful that the Club decided
to run it again the following year, then again the year after
that and it wasn’t long before a bigger venue was needed.
After a while in the grounds of the then Runwell Hospital we
developed a relationship with the fantastic RHS Garden
Hyde Hall which has now been the home of this brilliant
event for the last 11 years. The evening is held on the
bottom lawn in the gardens surrounded by beautiful plants
and scenery. What a lovely way to spend a summer evening
with a picnic on the grass, walking the gardens with a
magical soundscape from a top London band!
After a brilliant welcome at last year’s event we’re
welcoming back the Sunshine Kings Jazz band comes to
RHS Garden Hyde Hall on June 30th. Come along, bring a
picnic and enjoy the music! Tickets are £16 per person
available in advance from the venue, or from
Quire with Ktêma Encore! 2 Choirs- 1 World
Following their hugely successful tour to Brittany last year
Quire are returning the favour by hosting Ktêma, the
renowned World Music Choir led by Jeremy Simon, on their
first British tour.
On 7th July 2018 both choirs will be performing Encore! – 2
Choirs, 1 World at Maldon Methodist Church with a total of
90 singers!
Quire – Colchester’s Community World Music Choir has been
featured on BBC Radio as well as visiting Hull – City of
Culture last year.
Quire and Ktêma learn ‘folk’
choral music from many
traditions including American
Gospel, Central and Southern
African Gospel and Work
song, Hispanic song, British,
Celtic and West Gallery song.
Also included in our
repertoire are Russian,
German, French, Maori,
Tahitian, Irish and Dutch
songs, many sung in the
original language. The lists
are ever expanding.
Our joint performances are
lively, audience-friendly,
exuberant and straight from
the heart. We dance, we clap, we click our fingers and
stamp our feet as well as singing in four-part harmony – YES
– all at the same time! We enter into the spirit of songs we
sing.
Early in the afternoon you may catch us singing in
Promenade Park (weather permitting) as we warm up for the
evening Concert that starts at 8pm.
The concert is raising funds for the new “Holiday Dinners”
initiative. Gill Songer from Maldon Methodist Church writes
“We have set it up as we are aware that children who are
entitled to free breakfasts at school (the dinners having been
scrapped) are going hungry during the school holidays. We
are working with one of the local primary schools and will
be feeding up to 40 primary aged children twice a week who
have been identified by them.
We will be providing proper home cooked dinners, for
example: sausages, mash and peas/baked beans followed by
apple crumble and custard – all home cooked.
We estimate that each meal time will cost £40 to £50 so we
are looking to raise £500 initially.”
Register for tickets to meet experts
behind Great Baddow bus gate
Residents who want to learn more about vital infrastructure that
will help reduce traffic and pollution in Chelmsford can now
register for tickets to meet the experts behind the plans.
Essex County Council has set up 12 new public information
sessions over two days to give residents more time to learn about
the Great Baddow Bus Gate proposals and share their views and
concerns with highways officers.
The sessions, which each last 50 minutes and can accommodate
50 people, were set up after Great Baddow East Neighbourhood
Association’s public meeting had to be abandoned due to
overcrowding and safety fears.
Cllr Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader of Essex County Council and
Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, said: “I am delighted to
announce further details for another round of information events
to give residents a fair opportunity to find out what’s planned and
have their say in a safe environment.
“It’s absolutely vital that we hear from the entire community and
these sessions will give residents a chance to meet the team
behind the bus gate proposals, ask questions and share their
views and concerns constructively.
“I haven’t ruled out the possibility of an alternative scheme to
reduce congestion in this area providing it is affordable,
deliverable and is funded. That is why this trial will not take place
until 2020.
“GBENA’s public meeting earlier this year had to be cancelled
when the 200-capacity venue could not accommodate the large
number of residents who turned up.
“But these ticketed events mean 600 residents can meet face-toface
with council officers and, if the demand is there, we will
arrange more sessions to ensure everyone’s opinions are heard.”
A dedicated website has also been set up to provide residents
with more detailed information on the bus gate proposals,
including short videos, which answer the most commonly asked
questions.
The bus gate plan is one of 16 congestion-busting ideas being
taken forward after proposals were put to the public in the
Chelmsford City Growth Package consultation last year.
The bus gate proposal will help keep the city moving for years to
come and ensure Chelmsford’s roads, which are just 4% from
capacity at peak times, do not grind to a halt.
Cllr Bentley added: “The Army and Navy roundabout is one of the
worst areas for congestion.
“With the city’s growth continuing, that means more vehicles are
using our roads. Therefore, we cannot sit back idly and allow them
to grind to a halt.
“Congestion problems are already costing the city as much as £50
million every year, so we must take action now before traffic
worsens and air quality deteriorates and affects residents’ longterm
health.
“The Baddow bus gate is one of 16 bold plans that will help ease
congestion and create a joined-up and truly modern sustainable
transport network.”
Six sessions will be held on Thursday, 31 May, and six more on
Tuesday, 5 June, at Hamptons Sports and Leisure Club, formerly
the Marconi Club, in Tydemans, off Beehive Lane, CM2 9FH.
Tickets will be allocated in strict 50-minute slots to ensure the
number of people attending is controlled and safe, and so
everyone has a chance to speak to the project team.
A valid email address is required to book tickets. If you do not have
email, you can request tickets by calling 0345 603 7631.
Tickets are limited for each session and will be reserved on a first
come, first served basis. A maximum of one ticket will be issued
per person.
in healthy mid-table positions, with our flagship Danbury A team coming a very creditable 3rd in Division 1 losing just
one game all season. It’s not until we reach Division 4 that we can report on some gold medal success as the Danbury
G team romped the league winning 15 out of their 18 matches – all 4 players contributing significantly to the success
– Captain Norman Smith (55% win average), Mo ‘shall we dance’ Hardy (67%), Nicky Reece-Ford (81%), and Ivan
Chaplin (39%). The Club will now concentrate on the Chelmsford Cup competitions and the its own internal closed
Danbury championships – to sort out the local best from the rest…
Danbury & Bicknacre FC U12s Win League Cup in Epic Battle
In their first year of
competitive football the
Danbury & Bicknacre U14s FC celebrate their League Cup Victory
Danbury & Bicknacre U12
Royals team won an epic
encounter with Heybridge
Swifts at the Burnham
Ramblers FC Stadium.
Having met several times
this year the Danbury team
had yet to register a win
against their local rivals
from Heybridge. With the
crowd in fine voice the
game started at a good
pace and Danbury drew
first blood after 10 minutes
with a great finish from Jack
C. But Swifts, whilst
shocked, didn’t panic, and
played themselves back
into the game taking a just
about deserved lead of 2-1
into the half-time break.
Whatever was said by
Coach Pashley at half-time clearly worked as it only took 2 minutes of the second half for Danbury to equalise
through a rocket finish from Lawrence M. The game was a real battle now – Swifts with the strength and skills,
Danbury with pride and passion. With 10 to go, Danbury broke into the Swifts box and, through a crowd of
players, Henry T somehow squeezed the ball home to signal mayhem amongst the travelling supporters. It was
along last 10 minutes as Swifts had attack after
attack but rarely really threatened the goal as the
defence and hardworking Keeper Jim were kept
busy. As the final whistle was blown, the screams
echoed out and the tears started to flow – and that
was just the mums! Congratulations boys you were
magnificent.
Written by Steve Dodge Dip PFS
from the
Independent Financial Advice Centre
The two constant things in life are death and taxes,
(Benjamin Franklin) but I would like to add change. Very
little ever seems to stay the way it was.
I went to Whitby in Yorkshire recently to try and find a
pub where as a boy I watched men playing
“horseshoes”. After two days of fruitless searching and
visiting every pub in the locality, (I was not driving!) I
gave up, there was no sign of anything resembling my
childhood memories.
People change, jobs, careers, Wives, Husbands and
homes can change; the list of things that change is
virtually endless. Keeping track of it all is sometimes not
easy.
It is customary when joining a pension scheme to
nominate someone to benefit from your funds in the event
of your death. Quite often in one’s early working years
this could be your parents or siblings.
How would your
new Spouse feel if you died and your pension fund went
to your ex because of an out of date nomination form?
The pension fund trustees must decide who will get any
benefits in the event of someone’s death and legal
disputes between potential inheritors are becoming ever
more common place.
With so many changes in pension rules, tax treatment,
investments and list of potential beneficiaries there has
perhaps never been a better time to review your pension
schemes.
A review could ensure your funds are right for you and
the right people would benefit in the event of your demise.
Your IFA can help with these changes!
Lance Corporal David
Goddard of the 1st Life
Guards,
Cavalry, waskilled in
action on 19th May 1918.
The Battalion was at the
time at Etaplesnear
Boulogne, well behind
the front line, when
they came under attack
from enemy aircraft .
David was born in
Woodham Ferrers in
1896 the son of David, a
railway platelayer, and
his wife Ellen who lived
in North Fambridge. He
had one younger
brother and three
younger sisters.
Before he joined up David was also employed on the railway
as a carpenter’s labourer and in 1911 he was boarding at Railway
Cottages, South Woodham Ferrers. He enlisted at Chelmsford, as
a volunteer, on 9th September 1914 just 36 days after war was
declared. At that time he was aged 22 years and 60 days, 6ft tall
of fresh complexion with hazel eyes and fair hair. He was posted
to the 1st Life Guards who were at that time at Hyde Park
Barracks in London and there he undertook training until,
following heavy losses during the 1st Battle of Ypres on the 13th
May 1915, he joined the battalion on the 18th May as part of
the reinforcements. During his time with the battalion they were
involved in 2nd Battle of Ypres, April - May 1915, Battle of Loos
September - October 1915 and Arras April 1917. He was
promoted to lance corporal on 22nd June 1916.
In March 1918 the battalion was formally dismounted and
converted to No 1 (1st Life Guards) Battalion of the Guards
Machine Gun Regiment. Just before midnight on 19th May 1918,
whilst in camp at Etaples in the Pas de Calaise, an enemy air raid
took place when the battalion was hit by two bombs which left
42 men killed and 83 wounded including David. He is buried in
the Etaples Military Cemetery and is remembered on both the
Woodham Ferrers and North Fambridge War Memorials. He was
awarded the 1915 Star in addition to the Victory and British War
Medals. If you have any further information about David
