1st Danbury Scout Hut nearing completion
The 1st Danbury Scout Hut is almost finished! By the time
The Journal goes to print we hope to be almost there; with
just some fitting out, flooring and the landscaping to finish
off. Since the hut was structurally condemned in December
2016, all scout groups (beavers, cubs and scouts) have
been meeting in different locations every week. We plan a
formal opening for the HQ in September to allow us time to
paint and move our equipment back ­ over the summer
months.
The new HQ has a large main hall, with roof lights and doors
opening onto the side garden, which has been raised to
create our new fire pit areas. The large Quartermaster Store

small groups, meetings and leaders sleeping
It costs just £3 to join
accommodation. The kitchen has been designed to be

practical for each of our groups to use. The new entrance
hall has plenty of room for waiting parents, activities and
noticeboards.

We have made the decision to install an Air Source Heat
Pump for the new heating source; the pump acts like a
fridge in reverse, extracting heat from outside air, absorbing
it into a fluid which is then passed through a compressor
which increases the temperature and the heat is transferred
to the underfloor heating pipes. We’re really pleased that
we have made this choice to move away from fossil fuels
and create a greener footprint.
So with an underfloor heating system and a highly
insulated building, the new HQ will truly be a warm and
welcoming venue for the group to meet for many more
generations of young people.
We are extremely grateful to those who have contributed
to the fundraising effort so far – we do still have a bit more
to raise to get things finished but we are nearly there.
