June brings us to the end
of the school year and the
beginning of summer. To
our graduates and students
moving up, congratulations! We
wish you the best of luck as
you continue your educational
journey, begin a new career, join the military, or whatever your
next steps may be. The world is full of opportunity, in Broward
County and beyond. Remember to work hard and aim high.
For those of you looking to do something with the family during
these hot summer months, check out one of our great Broward
County Parks. Our parks offer everything from picnic shelters,
playgrounds, nature walks, and summer camps. If the heat gets
to you, cool off at one of our four water parks, or take swim
lessons. Check out the ideas below to get you started on your
summer plans:
• Glide over the Everglades in an airboat ride at Everglades
Holiday Park
• Walk through thousands of butterflies at Butterfly World at
Tradewinds Park & Stables
• Keep cool at one of four water parks – Castaway Island at
T.Y. Park, Paradise Cove at C.B. Smith Park, Splash Adventure
at Quiet Waters Park, and Tropical Splash at Central Broward
Regional Park & Stadium.
• Enroll your child at a Horse or Farm Day Camp at Tradewinds
Park & Stables
• Get aboard a Model Steam Train Ride at Tradewinds Park &
Stables
• Take a Stay-Cation and Rent-a-Tent or Tepee at Quiet Waters
Park
• Experience the “real” Florida at nature centers and natural areas
To create a season full of family memories, visit Broward.org/-
Parks or call the park of your choice for details, and check out all
the great parks in your city.
On a more serious note, June 1 marks the beginning of
Hurricane Season. In May, my office hosted a Hurricane
Preparedness Town Hall in District 3. A big thank you goes out
to Acting Emergency Management Director Lori Vunkannon and
her team from the Broward Emergency Operations Center as
well as our guest speakers from the American Red Cross, first
responders, and staff who helped to put the event together.
Creating a thorough Hurricane Plan is essential to the safety and
security of your family and home. Part of developing a Hurricane
Plan is making sure you are receiving the most up-to-date
information during a storm. The AlertBroward system is the
County’s main source of critical information during a countywide
emergency.
