ANIMAL RESCUE Bunnies galore needing homes by Bill Johnson This time of year is often not a good time for “Easter bunnies” — especially those cute long-eared babies bought impulsively by well-intentioned parents at Easter time. That’s too bad for a whopping eighty percent of those bunnies that are abandoned only a few months later, according to the Humane Society. These bunnies, which are very different from wild rabbits, are the third most popular pets in the U.S., and the third most abandoned. Experienced bunny rescuers like Jennifer Macbeth — and there aren’t many of them — keep busy year ‘round but expect even more calls sometime after Easter. Passionate about domestic bunnies, Macbeth founded Southwest Florida House Rabbit Rescue, in Estero. Although there are some east coast rescuers, including East Coast Rabbit Rescue in West Palm Beach, Macbeth gets frequent calls from Broward County residents who want to give away their bunny, and some who found abandoned ones. Many people think of bunnies as disposable pets, Macbeth says, but they require as much care as a dog or cat. They’re not good pets for small children who may be rambunctious, and bunnies are easily stressed or scared. Bunnies may look cuddly but don’t like to be picked up or cuddled, and you can’t play with them as you would with a dog or cat. Experience shows that many children tire of caring for a new bunny before long. “They really are something to watch, not play with,” Macbeth says. Macbeth bristles at the realization that bunnies are sometimes housed in an outdoor hutch. “That’s no place for them,” she says. “There, they are like prisoners, not pets, alone without proper attention. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.” In late April, Macbeth was sheltering 13 bunnies in her home, along with 70 placed in other homes. She could take only those that were abandoned and rescued from outdoors where they are in great danger. “We need adopters, not bunnies from people who want to surrender them.” The need for bunny adopters was underscored in a Palm Beach Post newspaper story published in April under the headline “Bunnies run amok in Boynton Beach neighborhood.” A spokeswoman for East Coast Rabbit Rescue estimated there were probably 100 bunnies that had been abandoned over time and proliferated. Macbeth emphasizes facts we should know before buying a bunny. ✓ Medical care is expensive for bunnies, and not all veterinarians treat them. ✓ To spay or neuter a $30 bunny can cost $300. ✓ To properly equip a home for a bunny can cost $800, including the cost of “fixing” it. ✓ At three to six months old bunnies become aggressive. Let loose in the house they can be destructive, chewing on things. ✓ Providing proper food — Timothy hay, hay pellets, and fresh greens can cost about $40 a month. (Many people buy sugary food that’s not good for bunnies, Macbeth says. She advises owners to research proper feeding for healthful diets.) ✓ Buying a bunny is a 10-yearcommitment, as the life expectancy of a domestic bunny is 10-12 years ✓ Bunnies need space large enough for exercise — to run and hop and have things to play with. They should not be in a too-small cage. Macbeth’s house has plenty of room for bunnies to play. You might call it Bunny Heaven. Some that are litter-box trained can be loose in the house. Yes, you can train them, but it’s not easy, and many owners don’t have the patience. Some of her bunnies use a “cat door” to the lanai and an extended play area. Two things are clear: There’s a pressing need for foster and permanent homes for rescued bunnies, and we should think seriously before buying a bunny and know the proper care required.
