Public Shelters
“Hurricane Irma required a massive mandatory evacuation of
residents living east of U.S. 1, and it was the largest evacuation
since Andrew in 1992. We had to open 37 of 38 shelters
because of storm surge,” recalled Vun Kannon. “Public
shelters are a last resort, due to space limitations, but if you
are going be sure to bring hygiene products, a sleeping bag/
comforter, pillow, and any battery-driven devices to entertain
the children.” Although shelters serve food, residents need
to be self-sustaining. Backup generators are available if the
shelter loses power. Visit broward.org/Hurricane/Pages/-
Pet-Friendly Shelters
The primary shelter is at Millennium Middle School in Tamarac,
although additional shelters can be opened if there is enough
demand. Owners must crate their pets, and care for them at
all times. The registration paperwork can be downloaded at
http://humanebroward.com/pet-friendly-shelter/. There is no
limit on the number of pets that can be registered, but capacity
is limited. A list of pet-friendly hotels and boarding kennels can
be found at www.broward.org/animal. “These shelters are for
people living in evacuation zones and in mobile home trailer
parks,” said Vun Kannon. “Beginning on June 1, people can
register at the Humane Society, 2070 Griffin Road, between
9am and 5pm.” Call 954-989-3977 or visit www.-
