JUNE 2018
FOREST GLEN
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Submitted by an FGMS Sea Slug team
member
Forest Glen Middle’s Marine Science
students took part in the Plywood
Regatta, which required them to build
a boat from scratch and then race it.
The Plywood Regatta Competition was
held on April 14 and 15, and started
on Saturday at 6am. When the FGMS
Ocean Guardian Sea Slugs team
arrived at the Dania Beach pier, where
the competition took place, we were
astonished by the amount of people who
84
had already arrived to build their boats.
When our team met up we immediately
made plans for our boat. None of us
had any idea how to build a boat, but
our mentor taught us the basics of boat
building.
We were given three thin sheets of
plywood, zip-ties, and some thicker
pieces of wood to build our boat with.
We started with cutting, then drilling
holes, using zip-ties to hold everything
together, sealing, and finally paint. We
not only had to build the boat, but the
oars as well. At the end of the day we
were sunburnt, tired, and we had paint
all over us, but we were excited for the
next day to come, which were the boat
races. Many of our members thought
that just as long as we could make the
boat float, we would have succeeded.
Our team came in Second Place in
the semi-final race. Everyone had fun
paddling and cheering on the FGMS
Ocean Guardian Sea Slugs. It was a
fantastic way to teach students about
the Marine Industry and a great way to
encourage teens to get outside.
We want to wish all of our staff,
students, and parents a wonderful and
restful summer. Be safe and
keep reading.
