COMMUNITY by Dale King Soldiers seek peace of mind through therapeutic yoga soldier in a full camouflage uniform sits cross-legged on A a platform, his hands pressed together as if in prayer. More likely, he is participating in trauma-conscious therapeutic yoga. Most likely, he learned the mind-healing exercise through Connected Warriors Inc. The woman who founded the South Florida-based nonprofit, Judy Weaver, is a highly skilled yoga instructor who a decade ago began offering a specific exercise regimen to help veterans defeat the anguishing mental effects of modern warfare. Headquarters of Connected Warriors Inc., the office where Weaver works, is in a corner of the Boca Raton Innovation Campus, a 1.7 million square-foot business building off Yamato Road. Classes are available, without charge, to service members, veterans, and families who are as close as Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Delray Beach, and Deerfield Beach. The assistance agency operates yoga classes in donated locations in 23 other states, nine countries, 27 Veterans Administration hospitals and vet centers, and 14 active-duty military bases where trained yoga teachers work in war zones with military colleagues suffering the woes of battlefield stress. Connected Warriors is also progressing with plans to expand assistance services to students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland who still suffer the mindnumbing influence of the Feb. 14 shooting that killed 17 students and staff. To encourage attendance, Connected Warriors “provides yoga mats, blocks, straps, blankets, and shirts to help [participants] find their place in this new, safe community to settle down, belong – and breathe,” Judy said. Weaver was teaching at Yoga South in Boca Raton in 2007 when she met Beau MacVane, a strapping, 6’4” Army Ranger, who, after returning from his fourth tour of duty in Iraq, contracted Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Beau asked Judy to teach him yoga so he could stay as strong and connected to his body as humanly possible as he fought his terminal illness. “Trauma disrupts the mind-body connection,” she said. “The body has been hijacked.” Judy watched as Beau followed her instructions and used his own determination to battle the decline of his physical body. What she viewed was mental focus and self-awareness that changed them both. When Beau died, he showed the powerful peace of mind he had developed, one that no physical limitation could conquer. Judy’s passion for offering her skill to the military is dedicated to the warrior spirit of Beau MacVane and his family. Soon after Beau’s death, Ralph Iovino, a Marine who served in Vietnam and had spent 30 years fighting the unbearable effects of post-traumatic stress, sought peace through yoga where other methods had failed. The immediate effects were so profound that he became a regular at the studio where Judy taught. Eventually, he became a yoga instructor. From their shared passion to help those impaired internally by war, Connected Warriors Inc, began. Realizing the mind-mending effects yoga can have on other service personnel, Judy quickly sought out and trained fellow yoga teachers in the specifics of providing trauma therapy. Brian Thornsberry, operations coordinator for the group, was searching for help when he found Connected Warriors. After returning from duty in Afghanistan, “everyone went their separate ways. I was alone. I had no one to talk to. I couldn’t pick up the phone to talk to my dad or uncle.” At first, he drowned his pain in alcohol. Then, he discovered Connected Warriors, with the yoga his mind needed and the community his psyche wanted. Judy Weaver said all their doors are open to soldiers and vets with troubled minds. “Yoga is our vehicle to create a community,” she said, quoting a retired general describing the program. Connected Warriors is completely supported by donations. To give or for information, visit connectedwarriors.org. P 16 JUNE 2018
