“ASK LAURA ABOUT REAL ESTATE”
The Pros & Cons of 55+ Active Adult Communities
Last week I appeared on The American Dream, a positive and informative national
real estate show (the Las Vegas edition airs on Sunday mornings at 9:30am on
ABC and I am a regular contributor 1-2 times a month on the show). I was talking
about the 55+ age qualified communities in the Las Vegas Valley, and what the
benefits are to living in one.
Some Pros:
Low or no-maintenance exteriors
Opportunities to make friends with other retirees
A quiet environment
Amenities such as opportunities to get exercise and socialize
Some Cons:
Lack of age diversity
Family members under the age of 19 cannot participate in activities
No care services are included
As the Baby Boomers reach retirement age, active adult communities are
becoming more and more popular in the United States. These new retirees don’t
see themselves as “old folks,” so the idea of a senior living community that offers,
and even facilitates, an active lifestyle is appealing to them. Ditching exterior
home maintenance chores frees residents of active adult communities to enjoy
their retirement years and do more of the things they love. So, common sense
tells us that not only do these communities offer a healthy and enjoyable
lifestyle, they also appear to be a good real estate investment. The everincreasing
demand for active adult communities virtually insures the future
values of our properties. Not to say that any real estate market isn't going to
have peaks and valleys, but in the long run my opinion is that one of the best
investments one can make is in our 55+ communities!
