A Passage to India By: Burt Davis / Travel Tales Editor’s Note: Every reader has a travel tale. What’s Yours? Let us know as we expand our travel section to include your “bucket list” travel Madventure. y wife Dianne and I began our Viking Ocean Cruise Adventure by visiting the Acropolis and ended it with a trip to the Taj Mahal - and so much in between. We saw so many wonders of the ancient world. After Greece, we traveled to Israel where we visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem. The wall was part of the second temple and is adjacent to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Others opted for excursions to Bethlehem and Nazareth. Then we entered Egypt at Port Said at the start of the Suez Canal. Our Viking tour included a bus ride to Cairo and a chance to see the famous pyramids at Giza as well as the Sphinx. Next, we visited the Luxor Temple followed by an excursion to the Valley of the Kings. We were able to enter some of the pharaoh’s tombs and were overwhelmed by the grandeur. Our sensory overload continued two days later when we docked at Aqaba, Jordan and journeyed to Petra which was featured in Indian Jones and The Last Crusade. The sight of this red structure carved into the cliffs is one I will never forget. Our post cruise extension brought us to the Taj Mahal. Most of us have seen photos of this wonder. It was as impressive in person as I had imagined. We were able to experience sunset and sunrise there. When folks think of Viking Cruises, many picture the famous riverboats. But Viking has six identical state-of-the-art 930 passenger ocean liners that travel the world. These ships classified as small ships by Cruise Critic can dock at many ports inaccessible to larger ships. The Viking ship’s design and activities favor active seniors. The average passenger age on a recent cruise was 68. Casinos – NO. State of the art work out rooms, spas and great guest lecturers – YES. This cruise enabled us to learn more about and see things that we had only dreamed of seeing. The memories will live forever.
