No Good Deed By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox Months ago, The Vegas Voice began planning a political event that was designed to give our readers a chance to meet, hear and respond to candidates for state and federal offices. The moderators were to be our Democratic columnist Howard Beckerman, Republican columnist Victoria Seaman and publisher Dan Roberts - who after six years together has never revealed his party affiliation (if any) to me. The plan was to have Beckerman ask questions to the candidates from his party while Seaman did the same for hers. No vitriol allowed, nor personal attacks. As the planning progressed several of “The Vegas Voice family” attended a Democrat function and it was there that Dan and President Ray Sarbacker met Susie Lee. She told them both that she would debate her opponent Danny Tarkanian, “any time, any place.” In a subsequent phone call with her campaign manager, Dan outlined the rules of the forum and again invited Susie Lee to participate. Several days later the manager emailed Dan and said that they had a problem with Victoria Seaman as a moderator. For Ms. Lee to appear, Victoria needed to be replaced. Not only is Dan fiercely loyal, he is also a man who won’t be bullied, blackmailed or told how to run his magazine and its events. After laying out why Ms. Seaman would not be replaced, the campaign manager stated that Ms. Lee would not participate. Vegas Voice political forum at Sun City MacDonald Ranch One by one, the Democratic candidates pulled their commitment to appear. Those advertising in The Vegas Voice pulled their ads. On October 17 th the forum was held at Sun City MacDonald Ranch and approximately 150 residents attended. Dan began the program by telling those present why they would only be hearing from the Republican candidates. Everyone on the stage was wonderfully informative. The evening went well with residents participating in the “meet & greet.” The next morning an email arrived stating one person’s disappointment with the event. Dan: I can’t tell you how disappointed and outraged I am about the event at SCMR last night. …You left out half the community. The event should have been canceled. It was more of a Republican rally than an equal showing of candidates…This was as unfair as it gets. I cannot improve on Dan’s reply: I can understand your frustration. As I mentioned, the forum was “open” to the Democrat candidates, but they refused to attend. Should I have “given in” to the demand to replace a moderator who, not only is a Vegas Voice columnist, who not only served all seniors as being the “guardian angel” to our guardianship reform efforts, and would not have asked any question, nor pick the question, nor even say a word to Democrat congressional candidate Susie Lee? Should a potential public official have the right to dictate to the public “under what circumstances” they will appear and answer citizen questions? Most of all, do we as the public “reward” such behavior? I certainly would not and cannot even imagine sanctioning and rewarding such actions from any employee - why then from a potential public official who works for us? And finally, would it have been fair to those candidates who willingly agreed to appear, answer questions and even stayed afterwards to meet with all individually? My opinion is that you misdirected your disappointment and outrage. It should not be at The Vegas Voice for holding the event, but at those Democrats who refused to appear. We did not “leave out” half the community. Half the community adamantly refused to show up. As Dan often reminds me: “No good deed goes unpunished.” In attempting to do the “right” thing for our readers, I guess you cannot please all the people all the time and I am sincerely sorry for that. 6 November 2018

With that humble sentiment, we’re very proud to announce that The Vegas Voice has received a total of 8 national and state awards. Feature Writing First: The Vegas Voice, Senior Guardianship To Rana Goodman and Dan Roberts: “The Vegas Voice is on a mission and judging by the tone and contents of these articles, it means to succeed.” For our guardianship articles – “It’s a terrific journalistic effort. Readers are well-served by this section.” General Excellence Second: The Vegas Voice, “The Vegas Voice switched from a newspaper to a magazine, but it didn’t leave behind its investigative teeth…its investigative piece on guardianship fraud resulted in indictments of one of the most scandalous abusers. The Voice should be proud of this work.” Front Cover/Illustration First: The Vegas Voice To Ray Sarbacker: “The cover illustration captures the mystique of several elements. Peter Pan is such an imaginary tale. This cover illustration captures the mystique of several elements. Flight, darkness, sea and exploration come through for an event telling readers to bring their family and learn to fly.” Topical Issues Second: The Vegas Voice Dan Roberts doesn’t hold back. His state’s attorney general is “Mr. Irrelevant.” The local district attorney is “Mr. Incompetent.” There’s no missing his meaning. Overall Design Second: The Vegas Voice “The Vegas Voice is primarily a compilation of columns. Each is in a module, which keeps the pages uncluttered. Each is treated the same with the name and with red and black type at the top. This magazine is an easy scan.” Wait there’s more. The Nevada Press Association (you know the big guys – Las Vegas Review Journal, LV Sun, etc.) followed with 3 awards; including Best Print Ad by Ray and; Best Investigative Story by Rana and Dan (“Great reporting and coverage on a subject. Thanks for your determined efforts to bring to light abuse of those most vulnerable in our society.”); And to top it all off, The Vegas Voice was chosen for the “Freedom of the Press” award for upholding the principles of the First Amendment and protecting the public’s right in exposing the scandal. (“The fervor to expose a major problem with guardianship led this senior’s publication to take extraordinary steps – including overcoming attempts to silence it…to see that reforms were addressed.”) To say that we’re honored and proud would be an understatement.
