The hair had to go.<br />

The star coiffeur swept into the room. "Ah! Madame d'Oc, ma<br />

magicienne!"<br />

"Ula, cherie! Ah, the simplicity of the costume <strong>com</strong>plements<br />

our masterpiece perfectly! Are you growing another?" Madame d'Oc<br />

tugged at the third sleeve of Maia's outfit that dangled off her shoulder<br />

and chuckled.<br />

"Many more as I dance worlds in and out of existence," Ula<br />

joked.<br />

"Be careful what you wish for! But you are radiant, as always. I<br />

take it Mexico agreed wit you?"<br />

"He did a good job, Jorge, don't you think? I could pass for<br />

twenty-five. You know he trained in Milan as a sculptor before<br />

pursuing plastic surgery au Val de Grâce?"<br />

"How eez his wife, Esperanza? She trained here, you know,<br />

many years ago!"<br />

"I had no idea! But that explains why she couldn't enter the<br />

Miss Mexico pageant. Eh, bien, Madame, I want you to cut it off and<br />

shave it shiny smooth."<br />

Madame gave a stifled gasp. Ula swivelled around in her<br />

lavender dentist's chair to face the old hairdresser directly, in 3<br />

dimensions then spun back to the mirror, turning her head this way and<br />

that, and saying to no one in particular, "I have a good skull, so I think<br />

it just might work, like that Irish singer who screams at the pope. Alors<br />

qu'ens pensez vous?"<br />

"It is not sexy!" Not what Madame had in mind.<br />

"Oh, really! Who needs hair to seduce and enthrall in the<br />

twenty-first century?"<br />

"But are you certain it will be good for the career? What we<br />

have now is what you say in English, 'a winner', pas vrai?" Madame<br />

cajoled into her customer's ear.<br />

"The career is virtual now. I have been liberated from the<br />

material world into the immortal dimension. My exterior must reflect<br />

my inner purity."<br />

"Ah? Hmmf! And what will the divine Alessandro think when<br />
