Business
MEET
RICHARD GAUDIN
Regardless of the industry or how big the
company, businesses are trusted every
day with the sensitive information of
customers, whether it be passwords, bank
details, or social security numbers. But
with a greater reliance on the Internet of
Things, and a constantly evolving threat
from cybercrime, are businesses doing
enough to be deserving of that trust?
According to the Online Trust Alliance’s (OTA) Cyber
Incident & Breach Trends Report, cyber incidents
targeting businesses nearly doubled from 82,000
in 2016 to 159,700 in 2017. Since the majority of
cyber incidents are never reported, the OTA believes
the actual number could easily exceed 350,000.
So, if 2017 was the worst year on record for
cyber attacks, was 2018 the year businesses
woke up to the threat? The answer, according
to Logicalis Commercial Director Richard
Gaudin, is yes, but only to a degree.
‘I think the big thing that happened in 2018 was
GDPR [EU General Data Protection Regulation], and
while that’s not a specific cyber security issue, what
it has done is raise the risk of data breaches in the
minds of businesses, who might now be considering
cyber security more broadly as part of risk and
compliance, and not just an IT function,’ said Richard,
who works in Logicalis's Managed Security Services.
‘The financial businesses in Jersey and Guernsey
are very used to compliance as a function
within their business and they understand the
concept of managing risk very well. But looking
more broadly across different industries, there
is still a lack of understanding about cyber risk
and what the most significant risks are.’
