An upmarket bar located on a corner of the<br />
city walls with views over the marina, this<br />
bar has a cool ambience and a stunning<br />
selection of cocktails.<br />
L’ARCA<br />
Just south of the old town right on the<br />
seafront, this large spacious bar has<br />
plenty of outside seating, while inside table<br />
football and live music prevail.<br />
BARONDA<br />
On Piazza della Misericordia is a stylish<br />
bar with a wide range of cocktails. DJs<br />
provide music and there’s space to dance<br />
for those who do.<br />
CANTINA SANTA MARIA LA PALMA<br />
Famous for Akenta, their sparkling wine<br />
made from the Vermentino grape. Every<br />
year 700 bottles are conditioned at sea<br />
40m underwater. They claim that the<br />
pressure increases the size of the bubbles<br />
and improves the aging process.<br />
BEACHES<br />
SPAGGIA MUGONI<br />
An oasis of peace blessed with soft pale<br />
sand and crystal clear water that is almost<br />
entirely enclosed and hidden in the Porto<br />
Conte Bay at the north-western part of<br />
the island.<br />
PORTO FERRO<br />
Accessed using an unmade bumpy sandy<br />
track through the woods this is a less<br />
populated beach beloved by surfers and kite<br />
boarders alike. A simple beach bar serves<br />
uncomplicated food and drink.<br />
CULTURE<br />
EASTER PARADES<br />
Festivities in Alghero see statues of the<br />
Virgin carried through the streets led by<br />
a brass band and surrounded by women<br />
dressed in black with ornate shawls singing<br />
mournful hymns. The town is decorated<br />
with red lanterns and the strangely<br />
hypnotic event is fascinating to watch.<br />
TUNA MUSEUM<br />
In Stintino you will find the traditional<br />
method of tuna fishing, practiced in the<br />
Gulf of Asinara until the last century. This<br />
museum allows visitors to picture the lives<br />
of the men who fished and prepared tunas.<br />
PALMAVERA<br />
Go back in time and check out the Nuragic<br />
complex at Palmavera, which dates back to<br />
the 8th century B.C. It is the site of one<br />
of the largest concentrations of so-called<br />
Domus de Janas (prehistoric hypogea -<br />
tombs carved out of the rocks) on this<br />
historic island.<br />
BASKETRY MUSEUM<br />
Inside the Doria Castle in Castelsardo is a<br />
collection of Sardinian basketwork including<br />
the renowned baskets of Castelsardo,<br />
fishing traps, typical su fassoni freshwater<br />
boats, and sieves and other bread-making<br />
tools. The fascinating exhibits provide indepth<br />
information on the raw materials<br />
used and the various techniques employed.<br />
ALGHERO CATHEDRAL<br />
Make sure you tick off Alghero Cathedral,<br />
built in the 16th century, the impressive<br />
Sant Miquel’s Dome, and the Porta Terra<br />
tower, which you can climb up for fantastic<br />
views across Alghero.<br />

From Alghero’s waterfront ramparts<br />

coastal road, past dramatic rock<br />
formations and stunning sea views<br />

DISCOVER NEPTUNE’S GROTTO<br />
Mesmerising sea caves, set below<br />
a sheer cliff face, are believed to<br />
stretch inland for around 4km, while<br />
the ‘Goat’s Steps’, carved into the<br />
cliff face in the 1950s, provide some<br />
great vantage points of this dramatic<br />
coastal landscape. The Grottoes can<br />
be reached with a short boat trip.<br />
VISIT THE VINEYARDS<br />
Get a traditional taste of Sardinia<br />
by paying a visit to the vineyards of<br />
Sella and Mosca. For fans of wine,<br />
there’s no better way to spend an<br />
afternoon, followed by the inevitable<br />
tasting session.<br />
SHOP FOR RED CORAL<br />
Recognised since ancient times for<br />
its intense natural colour Corailium<br />
Rubrum, known as red coral, is of<br />
great value to the Alghero economy.<br />
Only licensed fishermen can collect the<br />
coral and only certificated craftsmen<br />
are allowed to transform it into artpieces<br />
and jewellery.<br />
