HAVING A GRIPE
A sailing vessel gripes when, by poor design or
imbalance of sail, it tends to end up with its bow into
the wind when sailing close-hauled. The sails flap
around, forward progress is halted and she is very
hard to steer. On land, the term means to complain.

and all the deckhands have a massive man crush
on him. What power.

Natalie Wood
William Baffin (c. 1584 – 1622) was an
English navigator and explorer. He is
primarily known for his attempt to discover
a Northwest Passage from the Atlantic
to the Pacific in 1615, during the course
of which he was the first European to
discover Baffin Bay in present-day Canada.
Next, in service to the East India Company,
he made surveys of the Red Sea and the
Persian Gulf. They sailed over 480 km
further north than Baffin’s predecessor,
John Davis. European explorers wouldn’t
return to Smith Sound until Edward
Augustus Inglefield’s 1852 expedition.
In 1622, during his final voyage to the
Persian Gulf, he was killed in an Anglo-Persian attack on Qeshm. His determination
of longitude at sea by observing the occultation of a star by the Moon in 1615 is said
to have been the first of its kind on record.

FAKE FOLLOWERS Instagram is apparently
going to remove fake followers and paid for
likes… that should shake up the wonderful world
of social influencers we’re seeing all over our
news feeds. Following suit from Facebook and
Twitter, it’s all in an effort to restore trust.
FLAVOURED GIN Rhubarb, bubblegum, ginger,
Bakewell tart…. The range of flavours now
offered by the plethora of gin distillers is getting
rather silly we think – just stick with your Dry
London Gin and think about getting a decent tonic
to accompany it.
B1B2 VISA DRAMAS For the past couple of
years it’s been harder for yacht crew to get the
hallowed B1B2 visa needed to work on a vessel
in US waters and this shows no signs of abating.
It seems London has the highest rate of refusals,
so crew forums are buzzing with best embassies
to visit across Europe.
BITCOINS For sure if you’d bought bitcoins on
day one, you’d certainly be moored next to your
current boss rather than living below decks. But
if you invested anytime near December 2017, you
would have lost your shirt and trousers by now.
GDPR Just like Y2K, a huge amount of panic,
misunderstanding and unnecessary money spent,
and yes... our spam boxes are just as full as ever
with dodgy irrelevant emails.
CHARCOAL ICE CREAM The problem here is
the fact that no one really knows what charcoal
is supposed to taste like, and more importantly,
why they would want to put it in their mouths.
This idea was without a doubt a spin-off of the old
black is back idea, but it didn’t exactly take off to
that extent did it?
