The end of the week sees 12th night and the end of Christ,as for this year, so, if you haven’t recycled all your christmas waste yet here is a reminder what to deal with it responsibly. Wrapping paper and Christmas cards Place non-foil backed wrapping paper and Christmas cards into your Paper Sack for collection or if you live in a flat, place in your Paper and Card recycling bin. Remember, any paper/card with glitter cannot be recycled and must be placed in the general waste bin if you are not re-using them. Food waste All food waste, including bones, shells and ‘out-of-date’ food, should be placed in your food waste caddy - so please remember to recycle your turkey carcases, nut shells and vegetable peelings. Cardboard Flatten your cardboard and place in your cardboard sack to be collected. If you run out of room in your sack, flat pack cardboard and place it next to your cardboard sack. Make sure you place any smaller pieces of cardboard inside a cardboard box, so they do not blow away. If you live in a flat, please place cardboard into the Paper and Card recycling bin. Mixed Plastics Please rinse dirty packaging, squash plastic bottles and put the lids back on. Households can recycle their mixed plastics in plastic bags provided by the Council. If you live in a flat, please place your mixed plastics into the ‘Plastics’ communal recycling bin. Please note that Essex County Council’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres cannot accept bags of mixed plastics. Only plastic bottles can be recycled at the Recycling Centres. Foil, cans, food tins and glass bottles These items should be placed into your Green Box. In you live in a flat, cans, foil and food tins should be placed inside the communal bin for cans. Glass bottles and jars should be placed into the glass recycling bin. Real Christmas Trees Real Christmas trees can be chopped down and placed in your Brown Bin to be collected (lid must be shut). Alternatively, the Farleigh Hospice collect real Christmas trees for a donation of £5 in the following postcodes: CM0, CM1, CM2, CM3, CM7, CM8, CM9 and CM77. For more information and to register your interest visit www.farleighhospice.org/trees or call 01245 457 411. Christmas collection dates Remember that your collection days may change over Christmas and the New Year period. Please check your recycling collection calendar or visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/check-your-bin-day where you can look up your address which will include any details of alterations. New Year clear out If you are having a New Year clear out, then place any small electrical items and old clothing inside your Green Box for collection. Larger electrical and furniture items can be taken to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre. If you cannot transport larger items to the Recycling Centre, a bulky waste collection is available for residential households. The charge for this service is £12 for one item, then £6 for each additional item. Visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/bins-andrecycling/special-collections for more information on this service. Further details on the Council’s waste and recycling collection scheme is available at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/recycling. If you would like to request one of our Recycling ‘Easy Guides’ which gives further information on what households can and cannot recycle, please email recycling@chelmsford.gov.uk.
