Special Financial and<br />
Capital Campaigns<br />
Inevitably the time comes when any diocese/presbytery,<br />
parish, or faith-based charity must raise an extraordinary<br />
amount of money in a time-limited manner. When this is done to<br />
establish or perpetuate a given ministry or program, we generally<br />
call such efforts “Special Financial Campaigns”—“special”<br />
because they are administered to raise funds over and above the<br />
regular collection upon which the Church relies, and “financial”<br />
because the traditional goal of such campaigns has been to raise<br />
money—and generally only money.<br />
“Capital Campaigns” differ only in that the financial proceeds<br />
are generally restricted to capital needs, as for example, the<br />
construction of a parish school, church, or hall; or the maintenance<br />
and improvement of existing physical structures. Like Special<br />
Financial Campaigns, Capital Campaigns have usually been<br />
focused solely on money. This is problematic for the Church,<br />
however, since—as has been made clear—money should never be<br />
the Church’s only goal, considering that we can engage in real and
