Faithfulness in a Troubled Church
– Individual Stewardship
Hope and faith are at the heart of our profession as
Christians. And yet, there is much in our Christian
experience which discourages us, and specifically, which threatens
our cheerful contribution to the work and needs of the Church.
In recent years, the Church has been rocked by high profile
and disturbing scandals, ranging from sexual exploitation by clergy
or members of religious communities, for instance at Canada’s
Mount Cashel Orphanage and most recently in the Roman Catholic
Archdiocese of Boston and elsewhere in the United States, to the
Residential Schools crisis in Canada, involving the Anglican,
United, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic Churches. Attention has
also been called to the more global pains and memories of Jewish
communities, Armenians, and the Orthodox, to whom the Pope
repeatedly apologized on behalf of the Church in anticipation of the
millennial year.
