thought <strong>to</strong> create a little bad blood between the<br />

Protestants <strong>of</strong> Germany and the Protestants <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>France</strong>, and so deprive the latter <strong>of</strong> the assistance<br />

which he feared might be sent them from their coreligionists<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Fatherland. But his policy <strong>of</strong><br />

"divide and conquer" did not prosper.[6]<br />

It was clear that no fair discussion, and no<br />

honest adjustment <strong>of</strong> the controversy on the basis<br />

<strong>of</strong> truth, had from the first been <strong>in</strong>tended.<br />

Nevertheless, the Colloquy had prompted the<br />

<strong>in</strong>quiry, "Is Romanism simply a corruption <strong>of</strong> the<br />

The conference bore fruit also <strong>in</strong> another direction.<br />

solve the problem, how the two parties could live<br />

<strong>in</strong> one country. To unite them was impossible; <strong>to</strong><br />

exterm<strong>in</strong>ate one <strong>of</strong> them--Rome's short and easy<br />
