counsel as <strong>to</strong> the plan <strong>to</strong> be pursued, and began<br />

from this hour <strong>to</strong> prosecute each his part, <strong>in</strong> the<br />

great task <strong>of</strong> roll<strong>in</strong>g back the tide <strong>of</strong> a triumphant<br />

Huguenotism. They must do so at all costs, or<br />

surrender the battle. The Pope wrote <strong>to</strong> Cather<strong>in</strong>e<br />

de Medici, exhort<strong>in</strong>g her as a daughter <strong>of</strong> Italy <strong>to</strong><br />

rek<strong>in</strong>dle her dy<strong>in</strong>g zeal--not so near ext<strong>in</strong>ction as<br />

the Pope feared--and defend the faith <strong>of</strong> her<br />

country and her house. The wily Cather<strong>in</strong>e replied,<br />

thank<strong>in</strong>g her spiritual father, but say<strong>in</strong>g that the<br />

Huguenots were, meanwhile, <strong>to</strong>o powerful <strong>to</strong><br />

permit her <strong>to</strong> follow his advice, and <strong>to</strong> break<br />

openly with Coligny. The K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Navarre, the first<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> the blood, was next tampered with. The<br />

Romanists knew his weak po<strong>in</strong>t, which was all<br />

<strong>in</strong>ord<strong>in</strong>ate ambition <strong>to</strong> be what nature--by deny<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him the requisite talents--had orda<strong>in</strong>ed he should<br />

not be, a k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his own right, and not a titular<br />

sovereign merely. They <strong>of</strong>fered him a k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

whose geographical position was a movable one,<br />
